11 Prominent Players Not Making the Cut at the US Women’s Open

The 2024 US Women’s Open at Lancaster Country Club saw a number of big names fail to make the cut, including tournament favorite and World No.1 Nelly Korda. Korda’s disastrous 10 on the 12th hole in round one ultimately led to her missing the cut by two strokes. Other notable players who missed the cut include Linn Grant, Ariya Jutanugarn, Leona Maguire, Rose Zhang, In Gee Chun, Alissen Corpuz, Brooke Henderson, Jennifer Kupcho, Lydia Ko, and Lexi Thompson.

Linn Grant, a Swedish Solheim Cup star, missed the cut by a single stroke after dropping seven strokes on the second round. Despite this setback, it was only her second missed cut in 11 Major appearances. Announced as the tournament favorite, Nelly Korda’s year has been nothing short of incredible with six wins including a Major title in 2024 alone.

Former World No.1 Ariya Jutanugarn struggled in the Majors once again, failing to register a top-10 finish in the five major events since the 2017 ANA Inspiration. Leona Maguire, a Solheim Cup sensation with two LPGA Tour victories, missed the cut by two strokes after a disappointing second round. Rose Zhang, highly fancied to perform well, missed her second consecutive Major cut of 2024 after playing herself out of contention in the first round.

In Gee Chun, the 2015 US Women’s Open winner, was unable to replicate her winning form, missing the cut by four strokes. Defending champion Alissen Corpuz was another big name to miss the cut, falling short by two strokes in her title defense. Two-time Major champion Brooke Henderson carded a solid second round but was still four strokes short of the cut line.

Jennifer Kupcho, the 2022 ANA Inspiration winner, missed her fifth cut in the last seven Majors with a 77-75 showing. Lydia Ko, just one point away from the LPGA Hall of Fame, fell five strokes short of the cut line at Lancaster. Lexi Thompson, who announced her retirement from full-time professional golf earlier in the week, missed the cut by five strokes. Despite the disappointing results, Thompson expressed gratitude for the support from fans throughout the week.

Overall, the 2024 US Women’s Open at Lancaster Country Club saw multiple big names fail to make the cut, highlighting the unpredictability and competitiveness of Major tournaments in golf. While some players struggled to find their form, others rose to the occasion, underscoring the challenges and opportunities presented by these prestigious events.
