Fixing Three Common Swing Position Faults

Improving your golf swing can be a daunting task due to the complexity of the movements involved. Golfers can move in six degrees of motion, which include bending, turning, tilting, being vertical, being lateral, and thrusting. When one of these movements becomes too extreme, it can lead to inconsistencies in your swing and frustrating results on your scorecard. One common flaw that affects the golf swing is bending toward and away from the ball.

Kevin Sprecher, a GOLF Top 100 Teacher, emphasizes the impact of incorrect bending on a golfer’s swing and offers three fixes to improve this aspect. The first fault he addresses is when golfers bend too far forward or backward during the backswing because they start back with their arms instead of turning. This leads to incorrect movement and poor contact. The fix for this fault involves using an alignment rod to ensure the hands stay close to the torso until they are outside the trail leg.

Another common fault highlighted by Sprecher is standing at an improper distance from the ball, which can lead to bending too far forward or backward. To fix this issue, golfers are advised to establish a pre-shot routine to determine the correct distance from the ball. By starting with both hands on the club and gradually finding a comfortable distance, golfers can achieve better balance in their setup. The final fault discussed by Sprecher is having a backswing that is too long, resulting in excessive backward bend.

To address this problem, golfers can use a towel headcover under the lead arm to restrict arm movement and create a sense of connection in the swing. By practicing slow swings with this restriction and gradually increasing speed, golfers can improve their backswing length and avoid starting the downswing with the arms. Additionally, utilizing training tools like the GolfForever Swing Trainer can aid in building strength, mobility, speed, and consistency in your swing. This comprehensive training system includes various resistance bands, a swing weight ball attachment, and personalized video routines in the GolfForever app.

Overall, by addressing common swing flaws related to bending in the golf swing and implementing effective fixes, golfers can achieve better contact and overall improvement in their game. Consistency in movements and proper sequencing of the swing are essential for generating power and creating a proper sequence of motion. With dedication to practice and attention to detail in addressing swing flaws, golfers can see significant improvements in their performance on the course.
