Two U.S. Golf Association champions, Doug Hanzel and Bob Royak, teamed up with Robert Sheats at the International Senior Amateur to form a formidable trio. The three-man team, hailing from Georgia, took an early lead in the event but had to fight hard to clinch the title against tough competition from Kentucky, Atlanta, and New York. With Hanzel and Royak both past U.S. Senior Amateur champions, the expectations were high, and they delivered with consistent under-par performances throughout the week.

Led by Tony Wise, Kentucky’s team was a strong competitor throughout the event, challenging Royak’s team for the top spot. On the final day, Sheats eagled the par-4 10th hole, providing the crucial momentum needed for the team to secure the victory. Hanzel, Royak, and Sheats complemented each other well, with each player contributing valuable scores to the team total in the play-three-count-two format.

Despite his captaincy responsibilities, Royak downplayed his role and focused on ensuring everyone showed up on time. The team’s uniform attire added a sense of camaraderie, with Royak jokingly teasing Sheats about his missing navy golf shirt. The team’s coordinated effort, along with solid play from each member, propelled them to a two-shot victory over Kentucky, finishing the week at 10 under par.

Royak’s closing birdies, including a stellar shot on the par-3 16th, highlighted the team’s strong finish and sealed their triumph in the event. He emphasized the unique opportunity to compete alongside teams from various states and countries, relishing the experience of team golf in a competitive setting. Hanzel, despite battling illness during the event, displayed exceptional accuracy and ball-striking ability, culminating in a tournament victory in the individual competition.

The tournament’s format and challenging course conditions provided an exciting and competitive atmosphere for all participants, with the team event bringing a rare opportunity for senior amateur golfers to engage in a team-focused competition. Hanzel and Royak’s success at the International Senior Amateur has earned them a spot at the upcoming East West Matches at Maridoe Golf Club and the Concession Cup at the Landings Golf Club. Hanzel, a seasoned competitor in international events, is set to take on a new role as assistant captain at the Concession Cup, adding a new dimension to his golfing career.

Overall, the International Senior Amateur showcased the talent and teamwork of Hanzel, Royak, and Sheats, highlighting the potential for success when exceptional players come together in a team format. The event not only provided a platform for competitive golf but also fostered camaraderie and sportsmanship among participants from different regions. As Hanzel and Royak look ahead to future events, their victory at the International Senior Amateur serves as a testament to their skill, determination, and ability to excel in the senior amateur golf arena.
