To become a great putter in golf, it is essential to focus on technique and practice drills that will help improve your skills. One key element is having a good setup, where your posture allows your arms to hang so that your eye line is parallel to the aim line. Using a putting mirror can help develop this posture. Additionally, working on stroke path is crucial, as the putter face should stay perpendicular to a curving path. It is recommended to practice with a swing arc or on a putting mat to improve stroke path and distance control.

Fellow GOLF Top 100 Teacher Stan Utley explains the stroke path as going “straight back and straight through on an inclined plane,” which helps with understanding the concept for all golfers. To achieve this, it is important to stay relatively still during the stroke to improve path and distance control. Equipment also plays a role in becoming a great putter, so it is advised to have a putter that fits both you and your stroke. Custom fitting by experts like True Spec Golf can help ensure you have the right equipment that suits your game.

Once technique is dialed in, it is recommended to focus on distance control drills. One effective drill is the three-foot increment drill, where you set up balls in three-foot increments and work your way back. The goal is to control stroke length and distance by adjusting the backstroke length. As you move back, increase stroke size to match the falling speed of the putter, which will help improve distance control and minimize three-putts. Another crucial aspect of putting is adjusting stroke size for uphill and downhill putts, which can be practiced by alternating between these slope types until you achieve a favorable outcome.

Developing a practice plan that includes these drills and techniques can help improve your putting stroke and overall performance on the golf course. Consistent practice and focusing on essential elements like posture, stroke path, and distance control can lead to significant improvements in your putting game. By working on these areas with structured drills and the right equipment, you can become a more confident and skilled putter. Remember to prioritize practice and technique to dial in your putting stroke for optimal results on the greens.
