How the Hero World Challenge supports Tiger’s mission of aiding children

Tiger Woods’ dedication to making a positive impact in the lives of young people is evident through the work of his TGR Foundation, which focuses on empowering students to pursue their passions through education. Founded in 1996, TGR Foundation’s mission is to provide access to education and opportunities for under-resourced communities. To continue their impactful work and meet the needs of young people today, events such as the Hero World Challenge are critical in raising funds.

The Hero World Challenge, founded by Tiger and his father Earl in 2000, has been an annual event with Tiger as host. The success of the Foundation and World Challenge have gone hand in hand over the past 25 years, with events like these allowing them to serve more kids and have a larger impact. Tiger reflects on the Foundation’s growth and success saying, “These are all events that have allowed us as a foundation to have an impact not just in Southern California but in the areas where we played those events.”

In 2001, Tiger made the decision to focus on providing access to education and creating a safe space for kids to learn and grow. This led to the establishment of the TGR Learning Lab in Anaheim and the Earl Woods Scholar Program in 2006. These programs have had a significant impact, with 329 first-generation college students participating in the program and achieving a 98% graduation rate. The flagship TGR Learning Lab has supported over 195,000 students from Southern California.

Event revenue plays a crucial role in funding the Foundation’s initiatives, with over $10 million generated annually through events like the Hero World Challenge and the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational. TGR Foundation is committed to expanding its reach by opening more TGR Learning Labs in communities in need, such as Philadelphia and Los Angeles. The goal is to fill the opportunity gap for the 10 million kids in America who live in poverty, ultimately solving the education gap.

Tiger and TGR Foundation are focused on growing their impact by partnering with passionate individuals and organizations who want to make a difference in their communities. By asking people to ‘join the roar’ and create a movement together, the Foundation aims to build a non-profit powerhouse that can rival established organizations like St. Jude’s and Special Olympics. The ultimate vision is to have a global impact that surpasses Tiger’s accomplishments in golf.

The Foundation’s staff is already on the ground in West Philadelphia, serving over 2,000 young people ahead of the opening of the new learning center at Cobbs Creek in Spring 2025. TGR Foundation listens to the needs of each community to tailor their programs and offerings, ensuring they make a meaningful impact. By providing college and career readiness support, free after-school courses in STEAM subjects, holistic learning, and access to golf, TGR Foundation is maximizing its reach and impact on the lives of young people.

Tiger’s commitment to serving more kids in more markets is evident in the expansion of TGR Learning Labs to cities across the United States. Every city in America, according to TGR Foundation CEO Cyndi Court, needs a learning lab to address the opportunity gap for kids living in poverty. With the flexibility of their programming and a deep understanding of each community’s needs, TGR Foundation is poised to create lasting change and empower youth to pursue their dreams. At the heart of it all is Tiger’s belief that the global impact they will have in the future will be greater than anything he achieved in the game of golf.
