In the world of professional golf, Will Zalatoris’ midrange putts have been a challenge for him. Despite being one of the best ball strikers in the game, he has struggled with putts ranging from 10 to 25 feet. After returning from an injury in late 2023 with a broomstick putter that improved his short game, Zalatoris still found himself missing crucial midrange putts on the PGA Tour. This struggle was evident in his putting stats from last season, where he ranked poorly in putts from 10 to 25 feet.

However, during the first round of the Sentry tournament, Zalatoris had a breakthrough. He birdied multiple holes with impressive 10 to 25-foot putts and finished third in strokes gained: putting. This sudden improvement was attributed to a new drill that he and his coach, Josh Gregory, implemented. Zalatoris would have to make a certain number of putts from various distances before leaving the practice green each day. This rigorous practice routine paid off during the tournament, where he excelled in the midrange putting game.

The drill involved 30 putts, ranging from 10 to 20 feet, with the goal of making nine out of 30 attempts. This challenge aimed to improve Zalatoris’ strokes gained average from midrange distances, ultimately enhancing his putting performance. While his success rate of 30 percent may seem modest compared to other pros, it was a significant improvement for Zalatoris, indicating a positive shift in his putting game.

Zalatoris’ dedication to refining his putting skills paid off, setting a strong foundation for the upcoming golf season. His improved midrange putting performance was a testament to the hard work and commitment he put into his game during the offseason. By focusing on this critical aspect of his game, Zalatoris has positioned himself for success on the professional circuit, showcasing his ability to adapt and improve under pressure.

Aside from his putting game, Zalatoris made significant changes to his physical conditioning in preparation for the new season. Over the course of four months, he gained 19 pounds with the goal of achieving a better operating weight for optimal performance on the PGA Tour. This transformation was motivated by a desire to increase his stamina and stability, allowing him to sustain high-level play over multiple tournaments.

The added weight has not only enhanced Zalatoris’ physical capacity but also improved his overall well-being on the course. By maintaining his carry distances without exerting excessive effort, he has reduced strain on his body and minimized the risk of injury. This newfound strength and stability have revitalized Zalatoris’ approach to the game, providing him with a renewed sense of confidence and longevity in his career.

As Zalatoris continues to fine-tune his game and adapt to these changes, his performance on the PGA Tour is expected to reflect the improvements he has made. With a focus on both technical skill and physical conditioning, he is well-positioned to build on his recent successes and make a lasting impact in professional golf. By embracing a holistic approach to his development, Zalatoris is poised to compete at the highest level and achieve his full potential in the sport.
