Rory McIlroy’s surprising career goals: 3 things he revealed

Rory McIlroy is set to make his 2025 PGA Tour season debut at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and fans are eagerly anticipating his return. As one of the greatest players of all time, McIlroy has achieved numerous accomplishments in his career, including four major victories among 26 PGA Tour wins, 18 DP World Tour wins, and five Ryder Cup victories. Despite these achievements, McIlroy still has a few big goals left on his career agenda that he revealed in an interview with BBC Sport.

One of McIlroy’s remaining career goals is to win the Masters, a tournament he has famously struggled at in the past. While he has won other major championships, including the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open, and the Open Championship, McIlroy has yet to claim victory at Augusta National. Winning the Masters would not only add to his impressive resume but also give him a career grand slam, making him just the sixth golfer in history to accomplish that feat.

Another surprising career goal that McIlroy discussed is winning an Olympic medal. Initially, McIlroy was skeptical about Olympic golf and did not show much enthusiasm towards the event. However, after competing in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and narrowly missing out on a medal in the 2024 Paris Games, McIlroy’s perspective shifted, and he now considers winning an Olympic medal to be a top priority in his career.

In addition to individual accomplishments, McIlroy also expressed a desire to win an away Ryder Cup. Despite being part of five European Ryder Cup teams that claimed victory, only one of those wins occurred on American soil. McIlroy believes that winning an away Ryder Cup is one of the toughest challenges in golf due to factors such as crowd support, course setup, and home team advantage. He detailed the strategic considerations that go into playing in an away Ryder Cup and highlighted the difficulties that the visiting team faces.

McIlroy’s upcoming opportunities to achieve his career goals include the 2025 Masters at Augusta National in April and the away Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in September. With his talent and determination, McIlroy is poised to make a strong push towards fulfilling these remaining aspirations and solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest golfers of all time. Fans and fellow competitors alike are eager to see McIlroy continue to make history on the course.
