In this week’s Cognizant Classic, the PGA Tour has moved to the Southeast for the annual Florida swing, transitioning from cool-season grasses to Bermuda grass. On the “Fully Equipped” podcast, co-host Kris McCormack reported back on how pros were adjusting their wedges for the change in grass at PGA National. Many PGA Tour veterans are familiar with the adjustments needed, such as using more bounce and full-soled wedges on sandy Bermuda lies. McCormack observed the creativity and skill of pros with their short game and wedges, noting the envy he felt watching them pull off impressive shots.

With tour trucks on-site at every event until Wednesday, pros have the resources to make precise adjustments to their wedges. McCormack mentioned that players were busy making changes to the soles of their wedges, shaping the leading edge, trailing edge, and heel relief to suit their needs. These adjustments are not stock changes, but personalized modifications based on the player’s preferences and playing style. McCormack estimated that 90% of the wedge adjustments he saw were custom and tailored to each player’s specific requirements.

The process of grinding wedges involves taking material off the heel, leading edge, trailing edge, and shaping the sole to achieve the desired performance characteristics. Players may request specific modifications, such as a more aggressive angle for certain shots or a way-open face for dead-handed shots. McCormack highlighted the level of customization and precision involved in the wedge grinding process, with some adjustments being unique and unprecedented from a grind perspective. The end result is a highly personalized wedge that fits the player’s game perfectly and goes straight into their bag for tournament play.

For players looking to improve their performance on the course, getting a custom club fitting at True Spec Golf can help overhaul their bag for optimal performance in 2025. Finding a club fitting location near you can provide valuable insights and recommendations on the right equipment to enhance your game. Whether it’s adjusting wedges for different grass conditions or fine-tuning other clubs in your bag, a customized fitting session can make a significant difference in your overall performance and enjoyment of the game. Stay tuned for more updates and insights on equipment adjustments and innovations in the world of professional golf.
