Eugenio Chacarra: The Journey Back to the PGA Tour

Eugenio Chacarra has had his eyes set firmly on the PGA Tour ever since his unexpected exit from LIV Golf following the 2023 season. As he prepares for the co-sanctioned 2025 Genesis Scottish Open, this will mark his return to a PGA Tour event for the first time since the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship—a competition where he missed the cut as an amateur. The landscape of professional golf has dramatically altered since then, with Chacarra’s decision to join LIV Golf ultimately leading to a new path that he hopes will culminate in a long-term role on the PGA Tour.

Chacarra’s transition from Oklahoma State University to professional golf has been anything but straightforward. After joining LIV Golf in 2022 as a member of Fireballs GC, he achieved significant success by securing a victory in Bangkok. Despite his promising start, the ensuing years brought a series of challenges, leading to his termination from LIV Golf after a turbulent season. This departure left him without a home, forcing him to rethink his strategy and ambitions in the world of professional golf.

Upon leaving LIV Golf, Chacarra didn’t hold back in voicing his critique of the league. He expressed his belief that LIV was overly focused on financial gain rather than the sport itself. He cited missed opportunities in gaining Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points and qualifying for major championships. While he acknowledged the financial security that LIV provided, his aspirations have shifted back toward the traditional structure of professional golf, specifically aiming for a PGA Tour card.

In an interview with Flushing It earlier this year, Chacarra revealed his motivations. “I see what it’s like to win on the PGA Tour and how your life changes,” he stated. He articulated a longing for the access to prestigious tournaments like the Masters and Ryder Cup, emphasizing that for him, it wasn’t about accumulating wealth but rather achieving fulfillment through competition and recognition in the golf community.

After his split from LIV, Chacarra took strategic steps to reestablish his career. He sought out sponsor exemptions for early-season events on the DP World Tour, ultimately capturing victory at the Hero Indian Open. This win restored his competitive stature, securing his place on the DP World Tour for the remainder of the season. Currently, he ranks 19th in the DP World Tour’s Order of Merit, with ambitions to break into the top 10 to clinch a coveted PGA Tour card.

In his own words, Chacarra expressed the significance of his recent success: “Winning means everything. I didn’t know where I would play after leaving LIV, but I was patient.” This newfound confidence reiterates his belief that he can compete with the best, highlighting his determination to make a meaningful return to the highest echelons of the sport.

Before his involvement with LIV, Chacarra had already made a mark by participating in four PGA Tour tournaments, including a respectable T45 finish at the 2021 Sanderson Farms Championship. Post-LIV, he faced the challenge of making two major appearances, unfortunately missing the cut at the 2024 U.S. Open and the 2025 PGA Championship. These experiences, however, have only fueled his fire to reclaim a permanent spot on the PGA Tour.

Due to his previous association with LIV Golf, Chacarra faces a one-year suspension from the PGA Tour, set to last until September 23. However, the co-sanctioned nature of the 2025 Scottish Open allows him entry through specific exemption criteria reserved for winners of significant tournaments. This unique opportunity marks a pivotal moment for Chacarra as he steps back into the competitive arena of American golf.

As he prepares to tee off in Scotland, Chacarra becomes the third former LIV Golf member to compete in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event this season. Following Laurie Canter, who became the first former LIV player to appear at the Players Championship in March, and James Piot, who earned a sponsor’s invite to the 2025 Rocket Classic, Chacarra aims to be the first LIV winner in this new era of professional golf.

As Chacarra looks ahead, the Scottish Open serves not just as a return to competition but as a potential launchpad for his re-entry into the PGA Tour full-time. He holds aspirations of transcending being a mere footnote in the ongoing narrative of golf’s evolution. With a focus on his performance, family support, and an undeterred spirit, Chacarra embarks on what he hopes will be a rewarding new chapter in his golfing journey.
