Ryan Gerard Makes History at Mauritius Open: 2024 Masters Invitation Sealed

In a remarkable feat, Ryan Gerard’s recent 10,000-mile journey to the Mauritius Open has paid off, as he earned a runner-up position that has cemented his place in the upcoming Masters Tournament. With this finish, Gerard joins 13 other talented golfers who qualified for coveted invitations by ending the year within the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR).

Current Masters Field Set to Expand

This latest achievement brings the anticipated Masters field to 86 players, including legendary golfer Tiger Woods, who has yet to confirm his participation. Players can still secure invitations through exceptional performances in forthcoming PGA Tour events (with the exception of opposite-field events) or by climbing into the top 50 of the OWGR just a week prior to the Masters, scheduled for April 9-12, 2024.

Projected Top 50 Before the Masters

While the final OWGR standings won’t be officially published for another week, the latest projections suggest the following players will conclude the year in the top 50:

RankPlayer
11Alex Noren
50Sam Stevens

Noren, ranked 11th, stands as the highest-ranked player not already eligible, owing to his two tournament victories in England, including the BMW PGA Championship.

Other notable players making their way into the top 50 include:

  • Aaron Rai
  • Max Greyserman
  • Rasmus Hojgaard
  • Min Woo Lee
  • Si Woo Kim
  • Johnny Keefer

Unique Journeys of Brennan and Keefer

Michael Brennan and Johnny Keefer present intriguing narratives. Brennan predominated the 2025 PGA Tour Americas circuit, racking up three victories and nine top-10 finishes. His breakthrough came when he earned a sponsor exemption at the Bank of Utah Championship and clinched his first PGA Tour title, propelling him into the top 50.

Similarly, Keefer dominated the Korn Ferry Tour with two significant wins, ultimately securing a place in the esteemed top 50.

Changes in Masters Qualification Criteria

This year, the Masters has revised its qualification criteria by eliminating invitations from the FedEx Cup Fall events, opting instead for global national open championships. Notable qualifiers include:

  • Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen (Australian Open)
  • Marco Penge (Spanish Open)
  • Tom McKibbin (Hong Kong Open, LIV Golf)

The Masters has historically maintained a field size under 100 players, a trend that seems set to continue. The upcoming Latin America Amateur Championship and South African Open will fill two of the remaining spots.

Upcoming PGA Tour Events

Leading up to the Masters, there are 12 significant PGA Tour events, four of which are major tournaments that will likely feature a majority of already eligible players.

Tiger Woods’ Recovery and Future Play

Tiger Woods had a challenging 2025 season, sidelined first by a ruptured Achilles tendon and later due to his seventh back surgery. His current recovery is promising, and he is expected to be fit for competition before the Masters.

Final Thoughts

Gerard’s strategic decision to travel to Mauritius was fueled by his rank of 57 in the OWGR. Needing a top-four finish, he ultimately fell short in a playoff against Jayden Schaper. Meanwhile, Si Woo Kim’s impressive third-place finish at the Australian Open secured his position in the top 50, further enhancing the excitement heading into the Masters.

As the world of professional golf converges on Augusta, the stage is being set for an unforgettable tournament filled with both emerging talents and seasoned legends.
