Rory’s Dream Courses: A Golfer’s Ultimate Travel Itinerary

Here at The Daily Duffer, we often talk about the glamour of the professional golf circuit – the pristine courses, the high stakes, the undeniable talent. But beneath the surface of power swings and leaderboard battles, there’s a universal truth that connects every single golfer, from the weekend warrior to the world’s number one: the love of the game, and the endless pursuit of that perfect round, that breathtaking view, that unforgettable moment on a course etched into legend.

I’m talking, of course, about the golf bucket list. And it seems even luminaries like Rory McIlroy are not immune to its alluring call.

It’s easy to look at someone like Rory and imagine a life entirely separate from our own golfing realities. After all, he’s a PGA Tour champion, with access to some of the most exclusive fairways on the planet.

“In other words, McIlroy plays a version of golf — and lives a golfing life — that most of us can barely imagine.”

And it’s true, he does. Augusta National, The Bear’s Club, Queenwood – these are hallowed grounds that many of us only dream of stepping foot on. But what genuinely caught my eye recently was the revelation that even Rory, with all his unparalleled access, has a growing list of courses he’s yet to experience, a personal dream itinerary waiting to be ticked off. It’s a powerful reminder that the desire to explore new courses, to immerse ourselves in different golfing landscapes, is a shared passion, regardless of handicap or bank balance.

The Universal Language of the Golf Bucket List

We all have it, don’t we? That mental rolodex of courses we yearn to play before we hang up our spikes. Maybe it’s a legendary links course in Scotland, a picturesque gem nestled in the California mountains, or even just that highly-rated municipal course a few towns over that you’ve heard so much about. This isn’t just about playing golf; it’s about the journey, the adventure, the stories we collect along the way. It’s about building memories with friends, experiencing new cultures, and pushing our own boundaries – all within the beautiful framework of our favorite sport.

Rory’s list includes some truly inspiring places, from the rugged beauty of New South Wales Golf Club in Australia to the famously private Fishers Island Club. He even admitted to having “so many in the States that I haven’t” played, name-dropping Chicago Golf Club and Pasatiempo. It’s a sentiment I think many of us can relate to; sometimes the most incredible experiences are closer than we think, or in places we simply haven’t had the chance to explore yet.

“There are so many in the States that I haven’t,” he said, singling out Chicago Golf Club and Pasatiempo Golf Club. Even back home in Ireland, there are notable gaps. “Waterville,” he said. “I haven’t played. I would love to play there.”

And then there’s Bandon Dunes. Ah, Bandon. A pilgrimage for many, a dream for most. Even Rory hasn’t made it there yet.

“I’d love to go to Bandon and do that,” McIlroy said.

This puts things into perspective, doesn’t it? It grounds the unreachable, making us realize that we’re all pilgrims on the same path, seeking golf’s greatest thrills.

Your Own Golfing Adventure: Making it Happen

So, what can we take away from Rory’s revelation? How can we apply this ethos to our own golfing lives?

  1. Document Your Dreams: Start your own golf bucket list! Whether it’s a note on your phone, a decorated journal, or a Pinterest board, jot down every course that captures your imagination. Include local gems, regional favorites, and those international titans. Visualization is the first step to realization.
  2. Plan with Purpose: Just like you’d schedule time for fitness or meal prep, dedicate time to planning your golf adventures. Look for off-season deals, consider group trips to split costs, or explore stay-and-play packages. Sometimes a long weekend trip can fulfill a bucket list dream without breaking the bank or requiring a massive chunk of time off.
  3. Embrace the “Staycation” Course: Rory highlights courses he hasn’t played in his home country. Why not look at your own backyard? Are there highly-rated public courses within a few hours’ drive you’ve always meant to play? Sometimes the most overlooked courses are the most rewarding.
  4. Budget Smart for Big Dreams: If a trip to Pebble Beach or St. Andrews is on your list, start a dedicated savings fund. Even small, consistent contributions can get you closer to those grand adventures. Think of it as investing in your happiness and in unforgettable experiences.
  5. Connect with Fellow Enthusiasts: Golf travel is often more fun with friends. Join online golf travel groups, talk to your playing partners, or even consider a golf tour company specializing in bucket list destinations. Shared experiences amplify the joy.

Golf is more than a game; it’s a lifestyle rich with opportunity for exploration, connection, and self-discovery. Rory McIlroy might have the world at his fingertips, but his desire to explore new courses reminds us that the human element of golf — the shared love for the game and the yearning for new experiences — is what truly binds us all. So, go ahead. Dream big, plan smart, and start ticking off those courses. Your next great golf adventure awaits!
