Master Event Golf: Learn from the Stars’ Experiences

Hello, Daily Duffer readers! Sarah Chen here, your golf instruction editor. I’ve spent over 15 years on the range, helping players from weekend warriors to tour professionals unlock their full potential. One thing I’ve learned for certain is that every golfer, regardless of their current skill level, has the capacity to improve with the right approach and a positive mindset.

Recently, I was reading about the 8AM Invitational at Wynn Las Vegas, hosted by Justin Timberlake. This event really caught my eye because it’s not just a golf tournament; it’s described as a “cultural moment” where elite competitors, entertainers, and personalities gather. What truly resonated with me, beyond the star power, was the idea that even these high-profile individuals “all show up with something to prove — and have a great time doing it.” That’s the perfect mindset for improvement, whether you’re playing in a casual round or aiming to shave strokes off your handicap!

The spirit of the 8AM Invitational, blending competition with genuine enjoyment and a bit of a spectacle, offers us some fantastic takeaways for our own golf games. The truth is, golf, at its core, is about having fun and challenging yourself. But how often do we let the pressure of performance overshadow the pure joy of the game? Let’s talk about how to embrace that spirit, improve our focus, and develop a practice routine that elevates our game.

Finding Your Focus: The Power of Being Present

The article highlights a fascinating aspect of the 8AM Invitational:

“And in a nod to one of golf’s most iconic traditions, the Invitational enforces a strict no-phone policy — both on the course and at the parties — creating an atmosphere that feels present, private and refreshingly unplugged.”

This is a powerful lesson for all of us. In our ever-connected world, it’s easy to get distracted, even on the golf course. Phones, emails, social media — they all pull our attention away from the task at hand. The ability to be fully present, to focus solely on the shot in front of you, is one of the most critical mental skills in golf.

Why does this work? When you’re truly present, your mind isn’t cluttered with past mistakes or future worries. You’re absorbed in the process – reading the lie, feeling the club, visualizing the shot. This heightened awareness allows your subconscious, which controls much of your athletic movement, to operate more freely and effectively. It’s about being in the moment, much like an athlete in any peak performance state.

Drill: The “Unplugged” Practice Session

Try this: For your next practice session, whether it’s on the driving range or putting green, leave your phone in your car or on silent in your bag. Commit to a full 30-60 minutes where your sole focus is on golf. Before each shot, take a moment to breathe deeply, clear your mind, and truly feel your setup and connection to the club. Notice how your body feels, how the club sits, and what your target looks like. You might be surprised at how much more aware you become of your sensations and how much sharper your shots get.

The Spirit of Healthy Competition and Enjoyment

The 8AM Invitational isn’t just about serious golf; it’s also about entertainment and fun. As the article states:

“It’s golf — but louder, more social and unmistakably modern. Yet beneath the spectacle is real competition. Many of these names can play, and pride is very much on the line when they tee it up at Wynn.”

This balance between enjoying the game and striving for excellence is something I constantly emphasize to my students. You don’t have to choose between having fun and improving. In fact, when you enjoy the process, you’re often more relaxed, allowing your natural athleticism to shine through.

Think about Michael Phelps, who was featured hitting a shot in the event. As an Olympic swimmer, his focus and dedication are legendary, yet he’s clearly embracing the social and fun aspect of this golf tournament. This blend of relaxed enjoyment with underlying competitive drive is a powerful recipe for success in any endeavor, and especially in golf.

Drill: The “Fun with a Purpose” Practice Game

Here’s a drill to incorporate this mindset: Instead of mindlessly hitting balls, create a fun, competitive game for yourself. For example, on the range, choose a specific target for 10 balls. Score yourself on how many hit the target or land within a certain radius. Then, pick a new target (maybe a different club or distance) and do it again. Make it a friendly competition against yourself. You’re injecting a bit of competitive pressure, but within a playful framework. You can even try playing a “foursome” where you try to beat your own score from the previous round.

Building a Routine: Consistency is Key

The players at the 8AM Invitational are often top-tier athletes or entertainers, meaning they understand the importance of routine and dedicated practice in their fields. Golf is no different.

“The 8AM Invitational at Wynn Las Vegas, hosted by Justin Timberlake, has quickly carved out a lane of its own: part competitive golf, part cultural moment, and entirely unlike anything else on the calendar.”

Just as this event has carved out its own unique path, you too can create a unique and effective practice routine that aligns with your goals and availability. My teaching philosophy is built on the belief that consistent, targeted practice is the bedrock of improvement. It doesn’t have to be hours long; even 15-20 minutes, done regularly and with purpose, can make a huge difference.

Drill: The “Micro-Practice” Routine

Commit to a “micro-practice” routine three times a week. This could be 15 minutes of putting drills in your living room (like the “gate drill” where you place two tees just wider than your putter head to ensure a square stroke), or 20 minutes at the range focusing solely on your wedges and short irons. The key is consistency. Make it a habit, like brushing your teeth, and you’ll slowly but surely see results. Focus on one specific aspect during each session – say, hitting better contact, eliminating a slice, or improving your chipping. Remember, progress is rarely linear, but consistent effort always pays off.

Embracing the spirit of events like the 8AM Invitational can truly transform your golf experience. By choosing to be present, finding joy in your practice and play, and committing to a consistent routine, you’re not just playing golf – you’re crafting an experience. So, go out there, have fun, challenge yourself, and watch your game soar!
