Master Back-Nine Pressure to Close Out Your Rounds Strong

Hello fellow golf enthusiasts! Sarah Chen here, your golf instruction editor for The Daily Duffer. I’ve spent over 15 years helping golfers of all levels, from weekend warriors to tour professionals, unlock their potential. One thing I’ve learned is that the mental game, especially under pressure, is just as crucial as a perfect swing. Cameron Young’s recent victory at TPC Sawgrass offers us a fantastic case study in how to not only build a great physical game but also to conquer those daunting mental hurdles.

Players Champion: Cameron Young’s masterclass at the Stadium Course

Embracing the Pressure Cooker: Don’t Shrink, Expand!

Cameron Young walked into the final round of the Players Championship with a heavy narrative following him: the “best player without a major.” This kind of external pressure can be paralyzing, even for the most seasoned pros. But Young didn’t just endure; he excelled. He transformed the “daunting Stadium Course into a private arena.” How did he do it? By treating high-pressure moments as opportunities, not impending failures.

When you feel the pressure mounting on the golf course, whether it’s a tight match with friends or a critical shot to save your round, your natural instinct might be to play it safe, to protect your score. But often, the best strategy is calculated aggression.

“I’ve been in this position enough times to know that nothing is guaranteed,” Young said afterward, clutching the gold Tiffany-designed trophy. “To do it here, against a player like Matt, on a course that tests every single part of your soul… it’s hard to put into words. I think I just proved to myself that I belong.”

This quote perfectly encapsulates how embracing pressure can lead to self-belief. So how can you apply this to your own game?

Drill 1: The “Pressure Putt” Challenge

When you’re practicing your putting, don’t just mindlessly roll balls. Create pressure situations. Try this: Place three balls around the hole, each about 4-6 feet away. You must make all three consecutively to complete the drill. If you miss one, you start over. This drill trains your focus and develops the ability to perform under self-imposed pressure. When you get to the course, those shorter putts will feel less intimidating.

Mastering the “Moment of Truth” Shots

The Players Championship is infamous for its brutal closing stretch: the par-5 16th, the island-green 17th, and the demanding 18th. These are holes where “dreams go to drown.” But Young thrived. On the 17th, facing an anxious crowd and needing a precise shot, he hit a “57-degree wedge and played a shot so aggressive it silenced the gallery. The ball skipped twice and checked up just six feet from the hole.” This wasn’t a lucky shot; it was a testament to commitment and trust in his swing.

Then, on the 18th, a hole that requires a draw over water and often leaves players with a long approach, Young unleashed something truly special:

“He unleashed a drive that registered 124 mph of clubhead speed. The ball tracked perfectly over the corner of the water, catching the downslope of the fairway and rolling out to a staggering 375 yards. It was the longest drive on the 18th hole in the history of ShotLink tracking. It turned the hardest par-4 on the course into a pitch-and-putt.”

This isn’t just about power; it’s about confidence and execution when it matters most. It’s about knowing your game and playing fearlessly.

Drill 2: The “Commitment Challenge”

Go to the range or a quiet part of the course. Pick a target that normally makes you a little nervous, perhaps aiming at a small gap in trees or going for the heroic carry over a hazard (in practice, safely, of course!). Before each shot, commit 100% to your target and your swing thought. Execute the shot as if it’s the most important one of your life, without any hesitation or second-guessing. The goal isn’t necessarily to hit a perfect shot every time, but to build the habit of complete commitment to your decision before you swing. Too often, golfers hesitate mid-swing, leading to misses.

The Art of the Response: Match Play Mentality

One fascinating aspect of Young’s win was his ability to respond to Fitzpatrick’s brilliance. “Every time Fitzpatrick rolled in a clutch ten-footer to save par, Young responded by sticking an approach shot inside the shadow of the flagstick.” This isn’t just physical skill; it’s a profound mental advantage. It shows control, resilience, and an unwavering belief that you can also deliver.

Fitzpatrick, forced to press, pushed his tee shot into the pine straw on the right. From a difficult lie, he could only hack his approach to the front edge of the green. When Fitzpatrick’s par effort slipped past the low side of the cup, the stage was set. Young had two putts from 15 feet to win.

In my teaching experience, the ability to reset after an opponent’s good shot, or even a bad shot of your own, is paramount. You can’t control what your playing partners do, but you can always control your own reaction.

Drill 3: The “Competitive Reset”

Next time you’re playing a practice round, keep score, and imagine you’re in a head-to-head match. If your “opponent” (real or imaginary) hits a great shot or makes a crucial putt, take a deep breath. Walk away from your ball for a few seconds. Visualize a positive outcome for your next shot, and then step back in with a clear mind and fresh focus. If you hit a bad shot, perform the same reset. Don’t let one mistake snowball into two or three. Train yourself to hit each shot as an independent event.

Beyond the Scorecard: A Shift in Identity

Cameron Young’s victory was more than just winning a tournament; it was a shift in his self-perception. He is “no longer the ‘nearly man.'” This is incredibly powerful. As golfers, we often define ourselves by our handicaps, our best scores, or our past failures. But golf teaches us resilience, the ability to adapt, and perhaps most importantly, the power of perseverance.

Whether you’re aiming to break 100, 90, or even par, remember that each round, each shot, is an opportunity to learn and grow. Embrace the challenges, commit to your shots, and trust in your abilities. Cameron Young’s performance at Sawgrass is a wonderful reminder that with the right combination of skill and mental fortitude, you can overcome any obstacle the course—or life—throws your way.

Keep practicing, keep believing, and I’ll see you on the links!
