The Monster: Firestone Golf Club’s South Course 16th Hole

Ryan Lewis, a 22 handicap golfer, took on The Monster, the 16th hole at Firestone Country Club. The Monster is a challenging 667-yard behemoth of a hole known for being difficult even for professional golfers. Ryan, described as an average golfer, felt the full force of The Monster during his round. Despite his struggles, he approached the hole with no ego and a focus on improvement, having recently achieved a personal milestone by breaking 90.

The 16th hole is a par 5 with winding fairways, sand traps, trees, and an approach shot over water. Ryan experienced all the challenges The Monster had to offer, from the sand traps to the water hazards. The hole is both ruthless and fun to play and presents a unique challenge for golfers of all skill levels. With the upcoming Kaulig Companies Championship, the course was set up to tournament conditions, providing Ryan with a taste of what professional golfers will face.

Despite a respectable round of 97, Ryan struggled on The Monster. His drive ended up in the rough, and a mis-hit second shot landed in a fairway bunker. However, he managed to recover with a solid bunker shot and subsequent fairway shot. As the hole continued, Ryan faced challenges from the rough and water hazards, but he persevered, eventually reaching the green after a nine-stroke journey through grass, sand, and water.

Ultimately, Ryan completed the hole with a score of 9, a victory considering the difficulties he faced. Many pro golfers, including Paul Bonderson and Curtis Strange, have struggled on The Monster, reinforcing its reputation as a challenging hole. Despite the trials and tribulations, Ryan emerged from the 16th hole with a sense of accomplishment and a memorable experience battling the beast.

The Monster 16th continues to test golfers of all skill levels, serving as a reminder of the challenge and excitement that golf offers. Ryan’s encounter with The Monster highlighted the resilience and determination required to navigate such a challenging hole. As he looks forward to future rounds, Ryan remains determined to conquer The Monster and improve his game, embracing the journey of golf and the opportunities it presents for growth and development. Through his experience on The Monster, Ryan gained a new appreciation for the game and the skills required to navigate such formidable obstacles.
