Achieving Stripes: 6 Steps to Golfing Success Like 6-Time Tour Champion Max Homa

Max Homa, a six-time PGA Tour winner, is known for having one of the prettiest swings in golf. Homa was the individual champion at the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship while attending the University of California Berkeley. Ranked as high as fifth in the world, Homa never cracked the top 70 until he started working with GOLF Top 100 Teacher Mark Blackburn in mid-2020. Blackburn focused on reducing Homa’s arm lift in the backswing and tweaking his swing toward more of a fade. As a result, Homa won four times over the next three years and was selected to play on the 2022 U.S. Presidents Cup team.

One of the key aspects of Homa’s swing is his address position. He sets up with little knee flex, a relatively tall posture, and extended arms, allowing him to execute his rotary-focused swing. Despite these upright elements, he rounds his upper back and shoulders to free up his arms. During the takeaway, Homa’s “triangle” of arms and club stays intact with minimal torso turn compared to his peers, keeping the clubhead high and outside his hands for a fade-centric swing. In the top position, he adds a significant amount of torso rotation, maintaining some flex in his right knee. His early backswing gets flatter due to a lower arm angle.

In the downswing, Homa starts without getting too far outside-in, with the club shaft bisecting his right forearm as his hips open rapidly. His impact position is ideal for hitting straight balls and fades, with his hips, stomach, and shoulders facing the target, and his right arm under the left. Homa’s release is characterized by a left-to-right ball flight without a wipey, hold-off release. His arms are straight, the butt of the club is pointing back at the camera, and the toe is up, making it a great model to follow. Homa’s success on the PGA Tour can be attributed to his consistent and efficient swing, which has helped him win multiple tournaments and represent his country at prestigious events like the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup.

Overall, Homa’s swing can be broken down into six key steps: address, takeaway, top, downswing, impact, and release. These steps highlight the important aspects of his swing that contribute to his success on the golf course. By understanding and implementing these steps into their own game, golfers can learn to swing more like Homa and improve their performance on the course. Homa’s partnership with Mark Blackburn has played a crucial role in his development as a player, allowing him to achieve his full potential and reach the highest levels of the game. His dedication to refining his swing and making necessary adjustments has paid off in the form of multiple victories on the PGA Tour and international competitions.

As a rising star in professional golf, Max Homa serves as an inspiration to aspiring golfers looking to improve their game and reach new heights in the sport. By studying his swing and techniques, players can gain valuable insights into what it takes to succeed at the highest level of competition. Homa’s journey from college champion to PGA Tour winner is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and perseverance required to excel in the challenging and competitive world of professional golf. With his picture-perfect swing and impressive record of accomplishments, Homa has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the world of golf, with many more successes likely to come in the future.
