After a yearlong search, NBC Sports selects Kevin Kisner as lead analyst

NBC Sports has named Kevin Kisner as its newest lead golf analyst, ending the revolving door in the lead booth following Paul Azinger’s departure in December 2023. Kisner, an 18-year PGA Tour pro, will retain limited PGA Tour playing privileges as part of the agreement, allowing him to complete a full-time broadcast schedule while still playing on the Tour. His first appearances as lead analyst will be during NBC Sports’ coverage of the U.S. Open, Open Championship, and Ryder Cup in 2025.

NBC had been considering Kisner for the lead role since at least February when he impressed with his stints in the lead chair at several events. Initially, Kisner had expressed reluctance to leave his professional playing career for a TV job but ultimately decided to take on the role as lead analyst. NBC had been experimenting with different lead voices under a new telecast structure, but with Wednesday’s announcement, Kisner becomes the third full-time lead analyst for the network since the Clinton Administration.

Kisner’s appointment marks a shift towards a new generation of golf broadcasters, with the 40-year-old pro and four-time PGA Tour winner bringing his sense of humor, relationships with pros, and social media presence to the role. By maintaining his PGA Tour privileges, Kisner could adjust his broadcasting schedule based on his playing performance, similar to longtime CBS Sports analyst Gary McCord. He will be partnering with longtime NBC Sports play-by-play voice Dan Hicks in the lead chair in 2025, showcasing a fresh dynamic to the broadcast team.

NBC’s decision to wait until May to announce its lead analysts for major events in 2024 allowed them to experiment with different voices and structures. This approach aimed to provide audiences with varying perspectives while giving NBC the opportunity to find the right fit for a full-time analyst. Kisner’s appointment signifies a new era for golf coverage on NBC, with a focus on engaging a younger audience and bringing a fresh perspective to broadcasting. His experience as a PGA Tour pro and his relationships within the industry will likely enhance the viewer experience.

Kisner’s transition from professional golfer to lead analyst demonstrates the evolving nature of golf broadcasting and the importance of connecting with a younger demographic. His decision to take on the role despite initial reluctance showcases his dedication to both his playing career and broadcasting opportunities. With his unique blend of experience and personality, Kisner is poised to redefine the role of a lead golf analyst and bring a fresh perspective to NBC Sports’ golf coverage. Fans can look forward to hearing his insights and analysis during upcoming major events in 2025.
