Brandon Holtz: From Mid-Amateur Champion to Augusta Bound

Brandon Holtz made headlines recently by winning the prestigious U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Scottsdale’s Troon Country Club. At 38 years old, this Indiana native showcased not just talent but tenacity by defeating 28-year-old Jeg Coughlin III with a solid 3-and-2 victory. This noteworthy achievement not only highlights his skills on the golf course but also secures him exemptions into next year’s U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills and the coveted Masters Tournament.

Playing in his first-ever USGA championship, Holtz now finds himself on the cusp of a lifelong dream: competing at Augusta National. This revered course has a rich history, and for many golfers, earning an invitation to the Masters, which extends to every U.S. Mid-Amateur champion since 1989, is a hallmark of success. Holtz is undoubtedly riding a wave of excitement, knowing that he will soon play among the legends of the sport.

Most might know Holtz as a dedicated realtor with a love for golf; however, his background also includes a stint as a college basketball player at Illinois State. This diverse athletic background has equipped him with a competitive edge that shines on the golf course. Holtz previously spent six years on the mini tour circuit, honing his skills as a professional golfer before deciding to return to amateur status in 2024. His journey in the sport underscores a blend of persistence and passion.

In his interview on this week’s episode of Subpar, Holtz shared his immense thrill of teeing it up at Augusta, especially with his father on the bag. This father-son duo has spent the last 20 years as patrons at the Masters, soaking in the atmosphere and marveling at the course’s intricacies. For Holtz, the chance to play there in a competitive setting is a culmination of decades of admiration.

"I’m really looking forward to having my dad caddy for me at Augusta,” he shared with hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but let’s hope it’s not! It feels even more special due to the years we’ve spent there as fans.” This sentiment reflects not only Holtz’s personal journey but also the familial ties that make the game of golf so meaningful.

As for the layout of Augusta National, Holtz has particular holes that have piqued his interest. “I’m really excited to play No. 2 and No. 6; there’s something intriguing about those holes," he remarked. No. 2 offers unique challenges for long hitters, while No. 6 has a reputation for its slightly deceptive elevation changes. However, it’s No. 14 that Holtz can’t wait to tackle.

“The green on No. 14 is insane,” Holtz said, highlighting his eagerness to practice around the infamous topography. "I want to hit a bucket of balls around that green because the elevation from the bottom to the top is about eight feet—it’s fascinating." His enthusiasm for these intricacies shows not just a desire to compete but a genuine appreciation for the craftsmanship of Augusta National.

Looking ahead, Holtz also expressed hopes of being prepared for both the U.S. Open and the Masters, stating, “I think my brother will caddy for me at the U.S. Open, but my dad will definitely be on the bag for the Masters.” This strategic planning ensures that he’ll have the support system to make the most of these prestigious opportunities.

In wrapping up his reflections, Holtz emphasized the profound impact that his journey has had on him: “Every moment leading up to this has been incredible. Turning the page to this new chapter, I feel ready.” His path through amateur and professional golf gives him a perspective on the sport that many younger competitors might not yet possess.

Brandon Holtz’s story is one of ambition, dedication, and the love of the game. With upcoming events on the horizon, golf fans can only anticipate what this promising talent will bring to the world of golf moving forward. Whether he’s playing at Augusta or preparing for the U.S. Open, Holtz embodies the spirit of the game, inspiring both aspiring golfers and seasoned pros alike.
