PGA Tour rules officials have a critical role in professional golf, ensuring that the game is played fairly and according to the rules. Behind the scenes, these officials work tirelessly to manage a complex system of video tracking, on-course communication, and decision-making. At the 3M Open, held at TPC Twin Cities, lead rules official Ken Tackett is responsible for overseeing the rules committee and ensuring that the tournament runs smoothly.

With only nine officials at the 3M Open, the team strategically positions themselves around the course to handle various rulings and situations that may arise during the tournament. The use of the ShotLink app allows officials to track groups, monitor pace-of-play, and record important data for future reference. The officials work closely with other members of the tournament staff, including agronomists and meteorologists, to ensure that the course setup is ideal for the competition.

Throughout the tournament week, rules officials are constantly on the move, responding to calls for rulings, monitoring pace-of-play, and ensuring that the event runs smoothly. Rulings can range from simple clarifications to more complex situations that require careful consideration and consultation with other officials. The use of video replay technology has become an invaluable resource for rules officials, allowing them to review certain situations and make informed decisions.

For PGA Tour rules officials like Ken Tackett and Jason Larson, the job can be both demanding and rewarding. From handling pace-of-play issues to resolving complex rules situations on the course, officials must be prepared to act quickly and decisively. Their goal is to ensure that players are able to compete fairly and that the integrity of the game is maintained.

In addition to their on-course duties, rules officials also play a crucial role in supporting the television broadcast of the tournament. Mark Dusbabek, a former NFL linebacker turned rules official, works in the TV compound to assist with rulings and ensure that the broadcast runs smoothly. His expertise and knowledge of the rules help to keep the players on track and prevent penalties whenever possible.

As the PGA Tour continues to evolve and embrace new technologies, rules officials are adapting to meet the changing demands of the game. The implementation of a state-of-the-art video replay center at the Tour’s headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach will enhance the officiating process and provide even greater support for rules officials on-site. With new advancements in technology, officials like Dusbabek are working to ensure that the game remains fair and competitive for all players.

Despite the challenges and demands of their role, PGA Tour rules officials are passionate about their work and dedicated to upholding the rules of golf. From handling simple pace-of-play issues to more complex rules situations, officials like Tackett, Larson, and Dusbabek are committed to maintaining the integrity of the game and supporting the players on tour. Their behind-the-scenes efforts are essential to the success of each tournament and the overall integrity of professional golf.
