By RIATH AL-SAMARRAI AT QUAIL HOLLOW

Published: 13:43 EDT, 13 May 2025 | Updated: 13:44 EDT, 13 May 2025

Practice was suspended for a second day in succession at the PGA Championship after thunderstorms hit Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Preparations for the season’s second major had already been hammered by weather interruptions on Monday, with three inches of rain having fallen since the end of last week.

That was compounded further with a suspension of play called at 12.35pm local time. Within half an hour many of the fairways were under water.

The soaking will increase intrigue around the tournament on a course that would offer a severe test of length in perfect conditions.

Ahead of Thursday’s first round, it is no coincidence that the two prime favourites to prevail on this huge 7,626-yard track are Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau, two monstrous hitters.

Forecasts suggest the tournament will be largely spared by more rain, with the exception of Saturday’s third round, but further rain between now and Thursday will slow the course and play into the hands of the longer drivers.

It was announced on Tuesday that Southern Hills Country Club will host its record-extending sixth PGA Championship in 2032.

The course in Tulsa, Oklahoma, most recently hosted the major in 2022, when Justin Thomas won in a playoff against Will Zalatoris. Tiger Woods won the PGA Championship at that course in 2007.

‘We could not be more excited to return to Southern Hills Country Club for the 114th PGA Championship in May 2032,’ PGA of America president Don Rea Jr. said.

‘Southern Hills and its incredible members as well as the entire Tulsa community have always welcomed the PGA of America, our PGA Members and our Major Championships with authentic, neighborly hospitality.

‘We look forward to bringing the PGA Championship back to not only a first class community, but a world renowned golf course that will challenge the world’s best golfers as they compete for the iconic Wanamaker Trophy.’
