Caddies Rank Themselves as Top Golfers

PGA Tour fans may be surprised to learn that the people carrying the bags for some of their favorite players are often darn good players themselves. Some of the caddies on Tour have impressive skills on the course, as revealed by caddies Joel Stock and John Limanti on the latest episode of Subpar. They discussed who among them has the most impressive skills on the course, with John Ellis being a standout player, even though he has never had status on a Korn Ferry or PGA Tour.

According to Stock, Ellis is an elite ball striker who has a terrible brain and is a terrible putter. However, his tee to green skills are tour-caliber, as evidenced by his ability to break par in difficult playing conditions. Limanti mentioned Alex Gaugert, Erik van Rooyen’s caddie, as another impressive player among the caddies. Gaugert famously Monday-qualified for last year’s 3M Open and was paired up with van Rooyen for the first two rounds.

Other names that were floated by the group include Willie Wilcox, JJ Jakovac, Denny McCarthy’s caddie Derek Smith, and Max Homa’s caddie Joe Greiner. Knost’s dream is to showcase the caddies alongside their players in a made-for-TV match, where four players and four caddies would compete in teams. He believes it would be fun to see the caddies under the lights and experience some pressure in a competitive setting.

As a four-year member of Columbia’s inaugural class of female varsity golfers, Jessica can out-birdie everyone on the masthead. She is primarily responsible for producing both print and online features and overseeing major special projects at GOLF, such as the inaugural Style Issue that debuted in February 2018. Her original interview series, “A Round With,” debuted in November 2015 and has appeared in both the magazine and in video form on GOLF.com.
