Camilo Villegas: A Look Back at His Journey to Victory at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship

Camilo Villegas found himself in a career slump a year ago, ranked at No. 223 in the FedEx Cup standings and in danger of losing his job on the PGA Tour. Despite the pressure, he remained surprisingly calm and focused on his game. He made significant changes in his approach, working with Jose Campra from Argentina, who emphasized the need for patience and perseverance as they made drastic changes to Villegas’ swing. This gamble paid off as Villegas finished tied for second in Mexico and went on to win the World Wide Technology Championship in Bermuda, earning a two-year Tour exemption.

Villegas credits his success to a combination of factors, including his newfound partnership with Campra and a shift in mindset towards patience and trust in the process. Despite not fully understanding the changes being made, Villegas remained committed and eventually saw everything start to click. This dedication was tested during the Simmons Bank Open in Knoxville, Tennessee, where Campra ignited Villegas’ motivation to win and secure a spot at the Masters. This goal fueled Villegas’ performance in Bermuda, where he secured his first victory in over nine years, dedicating the win to his late daughter, Mia, who passed away from brain cancer in 2020.

The emotional victory in Bermuda was a turning point for Villegas, reminding him of the importance of family and the support of his peers in the golf community. Despite the challenges he has faced this season, Villegas remains steadfast in his commitment to his game, understanding that success in golf is unpredictable and requires resilience. He sees last year’s win as a catalyst for continued growth and improvement in his game, allowing him the time to work on areas that need strengthening.

As Villegas returns to Port Royal, the site of his inspirational victory, he plans to take a moment to reflect on the memories and emotions of that triumph. While typically focused on the present and the task at hand, Villegas intends to allow himself to reminisce and appreciate the journey that led him to that unforgettable win. With a sense of gratitude and determination, Villegas looks forward to the challenges ahead, understanding that the game of golf is filled with ups and downs, requiring a balance of perseverance and patience to succeed.
