Celebrating Golfweek’s 50th Anniversary: A Conversation with Ryan Lavner

As part of our 50th anniversary celebrations, Golfweek is taking a nostalgic journey, revisiting the contributions of former employees who shaped the brand. In this article, we delve into the experiences of Ryan Lavner, a former Golfweek associate editor who has since become a prominent figure at Golf Channel.

Ryan Lavner’s Tenure at Golfweek

Years Worked: 2010-2012

Role and Responsibilities at Golfweek

Title: Associate Editor, Golfweek.com

At Golfweek, Ryan Lavner was responsible for crafting and editing digital content while also contributing features, notes, and columns to the print magazine. His diverse skill set in both online and print media marked him as a key player in the editorial team.

Current Position

Title: Talent/Senior Writer, Golf Channel

Ryan Lavner currently serves as a talent and senior writer for Golf Channel, where he continues to make impactful contributions to golf journalism.

Proud Accomplishments at Golfweek

One of Ryan’s proudest moments at Golfweek was producing two significant cover stories: one on the 2010 U.S. Junior Amateur champion Jim Liu and the other on the late Jarrod Lyle’s heartfelt visit to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. These stories, which reflect both talent and compassion, are proudly displayed in his home office.

Memorable Challenges

Ryan recalls a particularly intense experience following the thrilling 2012 NCAA Championship final between Texas and Alabama. After writing the game story for Golfweek’s website right after the final putt, he was informed that the editors wanted to feature his piece in the print edition. This required him to expand the story rapidly to meet the magazine’s tight deadline, demonstrating the pressures and excitement that come with sports journalism.

Favorite Golf Course

For Ryan, the standout golf course he has played is North Berwick in Scotland. He describes it as an eclectic blend of holes with breathtaking views, abundant strategy, and a mix of fun, quirky challenges. As he puts it, “Nothing beats a cold pint downtown after a round there.”

As Golfweek celebrates its 50th anniversary, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all former employees like Ryan Lavner, whose dedication continues to enhance the world of golf journalism. The connections formed within this small community are what make it truly special.

This article serves as a reminder of the rich history and personal stories that have contributed to Golfweek’s legacy.
