Chi Chi Rodriguez, an iconic figure in the world of professional golf, passed away at the age of 88. Known for his charismatic personality and entertaining sword routine on the greens, Rodriguez was a beloved player both on and off the course. His passing was first announced on Facebook by Carmelo Javier Rios, a member of the Senate in Puerto Rico, and was later confirmed on the Puerto Rico Golf Association website. The cause of his death has not been disclosed at this time.

Born Juan Antonio Rodriguez in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, on October 23, 1935, Chi Chi earned his nickname as a young baseball player. He began his career as a caddie and later joined the U.S. Army at 19. His professional golf career took off in 1963 when he secured his first PGA Tour win at the Denver Open Invitational. Over the years, he went on to win several prestigious events, including the Lucky International Open, the Western Open, the Texas Open, the Sahara Invitational, the Byron Nelson Classic, and the Tallahassee Open.

In addition to his success on the PGA Tour, Chi Chi played 466 times on the PGA Tour Champions, capturing 22 victories on the senior circuit. His last professional appearance was in 2016, marking the end of a long and illustrious career in golf. In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Chi Chi was awarded the Bob Jones Award by the U.S. Golf Association in 1989 and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1992.

Despite his modest stature, Chi Chi was known for his powerful drives off the tee and his ability to make clutch putts when it mattered most. One of his most memorable moments came in 1994 when he teamed up with golf legend Jack Nicklaus at the Diners Club Matches. His unique personality and entertaining antics endeared him to fans around the world, making him a fan favorite wherever he competed.

Throughout his career, Chi Chi remained a proud ambassador for his home country of Puerto Rico, becoming the first and only Puerto Rican to be enshrined in the World Golf Hall of Fame. His impact on the sport of golf extended far beyond his playing days, as he continued to inspire the next generation of players with his passion and dedication to the game. Chi Chi’s legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and admired him, and his contributions to the world of golf will never be forgotten.
