Chipping from a tough lie

Chipping around the greens is a crucial part of a golfer’s game, and having a bad lie can make it even more challenging. However, it doesn’t have to result in a poor chip shot. In this edition of Play Smart, GOLF Top 100 Teacher Joe Hallett provides valuable tips on how to chip from a tough lie to improve your overall game.

When faced with a bad lie around the greens, the key is not to panic. Instead of fluffing up your lie, which is not an option in tournament or money games, Hallett suggests making a few key adjustments to your setup and technique. By raising the club almost to a vertical position and standing closer to the ball, you can keep the bounce of the club engaged and help it work under the ball.

The upright shaft angle and standing closer to the ball will make it feel like you are holding a putter over the ball. This setup allows you to make a putting or chipping stroke to pop the ball out of the bad lie. By rocking your shoulders correctly, you can ensure that the ball escapes the tough lie and rolls closer to the hole, giving you a better chance at saving par or making a birdie.

Chipping from a tough lie can seem daunting, but with the right adjustments and technique, it can be manageable. By following Hallett’s advice and staying calm and focused, you can improve your performance around the greens and become a more confident player overall. So the next time you find yourself with a bad lie, remember to “Don’t get up tight, get upright” and trust in your skills to execute a successful chip shot.

Improving your short game skills, especially when faced with challenging lies, can make a significant difference in your overall scores and confidence on the course. Whether you are playing in a competitive tournament or a casual round with friends, mastering the art of chipping from tough lies can help you lower your scores and enjoy the game even more. So take the time to practice and implement Hallett’s tips to elevate your short game to the next level and become a more well-rounded player.

In conclusion, chipping from a tough lie doesn’t have to be a dreaded aspect of your golf game. By making the right adjustments to your setup and technique, you can effectively navigate challenging lies and improve your chances of getting the ball close to the hole. With practice and patience, you can build confidence in your ability to execute successful chip shots from any situation, ultimately leading to lower scores and a more enjoyable golfing experience. So next time you face a bad lie around the greens, remember to stay calm, make the necessary adjustments, and trust in your skills to deliver a great shot.
