The Conestoga River presented a challenge for officials during the 2015 U.S. Women’s Open tournament at Lancaster Country Club, as kayakers congregated in a section of the river that separated a portion of the course from three complete holes. To address this issue, tournament senior manager Sean Kerrigan worked with officers from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission to develop a plan to ensure that the kayakers did not interfere with play. While they were unable to prevent kayakers from being on the river, officers will be present to ensure they do not disrupt the tournament.
One of the holes affected by the river is No. 3, where players must hit over the river from an elevated tee box. The area beside the tee box offers a prime vantage point for fans to view the action on several other holes on the course. However, due to the rough terrain and limited space in the area, fans are advised to arrive early if they wish to watch from this spot. Alternatively, fans can cross the river to view action on several other holes and visit a concession stand.
In addition to No. 3, fans can catch the action on Nos. 4, 5, and 6 by crossing the river. There is also the possibility that the tee box for No. 7 may be moved across the river for one or more rounds of the tournament. By offering different viewing options and ensuring the safety of the players and spectators, tournament officials aim to provide an enjoyable experience for all involved. The unique layout of the course, with the Conestoga River running through it, adds an element of challenge and excitement for both players and fans alike.
