Lexi Thompson, the 28-year-old golfer, has been at the center of much debate following her post-round presser at the Solheim Cup. After a viral clip of her exchange with a reporter regarding a failed shot, golf pundits and fans have been discussing whether the criticism towards Lexi is justified. LPGA Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez defended Lexi, stating that she has been unfairly picked on and criticized.

One instance that brought scrutiny towards Lexi was at the 2022 KPMG PGA Championship, where she held a two-stroke lead with three holes to play but couldn’t close the deal and lost the tournament. Following the loss, Lexi was fined for slow play and faced backlash on social media for declining to speak to the media. This incident highlights how Lexi has been treated differently compared to her peers in similar situations.

Another incident that raised eyebrows was when Lexi played golf with Donald Trump, leading to a media frenzy and causing her to take a break from social media. While many big-name golfers have played with Trump without much attention, the focus on Lexi’s round with him was disproportionate. This highlights the double standards that exist for male and female players in the golf world.

During the final round of the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open, Lexi Thompson missed a crucial eagle putt and went on to lose the tournament. Golf analyst Brandel Chamblee criticized her putting technique on live television, a level of scrutiny that is rarely applied to other LPGA golfers. This incident showcases the unfair treatment that Lexi has received in comparison to her peers.

At the 2023 Solheim Cup, Lexi’s response to a reporter’s question about a failed shot sparked controversy within the golf community. Many criticized her for not commenting on the shot, but her teammate Jessica Korda defended her, stating that the golf media often unfairly targets Lexi. Despite her strong performance in the subsequent matches, Lexi’s achievements were overshadowed by the negative attention she received.

On social media, Lexi Thompson has been subjected to harsh and aggressive comments, particularly regarding her putting. Despite her consistent efforts to improve her game and share her progress online, she continues to face unwarranted criticism from fans. The disabling of comments on her posts reflects the toxic environment that often surrounds Lexi on social media.

The combination of incidents like the rules controversy at the 2017 ANA Inspiration and the constant scrutiny over her game has created a narrative that Lexi Thompson has had a rough deal in the golfing world. While she continues to excel on the course and contribute positively to the sport, the adverse reactions and treatment she faces suggest that she is held to a different standard than her peers. The ongoing discussion surrounding Lexi’s experiences highlights the need for fair and equal treatment of all golfers, regardless of their gender.
