The 79th U.S. Women’s Open at Lancaster (Pa.) Country Club is set with a field of 156 players after four additional players earned full exemptions into the championship. Gabriela Ruffels, Lauren Coughlin, Esther Henseleit, and Rio Takeda secured exemptions based on the updated Rolex Rankings as of May 27. The USGA allocated eight spots in the field for players who could potentially qualify by moving into the top 75.
Coughlin and Takeda will be making their championship debuts from May 30 to June 2. Coughlin impressed earlier in April by tying for third at the Chevron Championship, the season’s first major. Meanwhile, the four alternates added to the field are Sarah Kemp, Agathe Laisne, Amelia Lewis, and Stephanie Meadow.
The field saw a shakeup last week when the No. 2-ranked Lilia Vu withdrew from the Women’s Open due to a back injury that has been affecting her for most of the season. As a result, Vu was replaced by Yealimi Noh, who shot 69-73 at Rainier Golf and Country Club in Seattle, Washington.
The U.S. Women’s Open is always a highly-anticipated event in the golfing calendar and this year’s edition promises to be no different. With a mix of experienced players and newcomers, the stage is set for an exciting competition at Lancaster Country Club.
The addition of players like Ruffels, Henseleit, and Takeda adds an element of excitement to the field, as fans will be eager to see how they perform in a major championship setting. Coughlin’s impressive showing at the Chevron Championship earlier in the season has also raised expectations for her U.S. Women’s Open debut.
On the flip side, the withdrawals of players like Vu due to injury serve as a reminder of the physical demands of professional golf. Injuries can often derail a player’s season and it’s unfortunate for Vu to miss out on a major championship opportunity.
The four alternates who were added to the field will be looking to make the most of their opportunity and showcase their skills on a big stage. Kemp, Laisne, Lewis, and Meadow will be eager to make an impact and potentially surprise the field with their performances.
As the countdown to the U.S. Women’s Open begins, golf fans around the world are eagerly awaiting the start of the championship. With a competitive field of talented players and a picturesque venue in Lancaster Country Club, the stage is set for a thrilling week of golf action. Make sure to tune in from May 30 to June 2 to witness some of the top women golfers in the world compete for one of the most prestigious titles in the sport.
