The first night of the new TGL tournament, featuring Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s simulator golf league, drew in a peak average audience of over a million viewers on ESPN. Despite the match between The Bay Golf Club and New York Golf Club not being a competitive spectacle, the event still managed to attract an overall average of 919,000 viewers in its primetime slot. The event reached over a million viewers on average during the hour of 9:15-10:15pm ET, marking a successful debut for the unique hi-tech competition.

The absolute peak viewership for the event at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, reached 1.1 million viewers during the 9:15-9:30pm time slot. Ludvig Aberg led his team to a victory over Xander Schauffele, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Rickie Fowler in the innovative 15-hole match, captivating viewers with the exciting gameplay. TGL officials are optimistic for the second match of the competition, with Woods’ Jupiter Links team set to face off against the Los Angeles Golf Club in the upcoming match.

For those interested in staying up to date with the latest tour news, equipment news, reviews, head-to-heads, and buyer’s guides, subscribing to the Golf Monthly newsletter is recommended. Player lineups for each match will be announced on Fridays, as only three of the four players compete each week. Woods is expected to play in his team’s first outing, adding to the excitement of the tournament for fans.

Viewers can catch all 15 regular season matches and the playoffs, which conclude with the finals on March 23-25, on ESPN and ESPN+. The opportunity to stream the matches provides golf fans with easy access to follow their favorite teams and players throughout the tournament. With top players like Woods, McIlroy, and Morikawa participating, the competition promises to offer exciting and entertaining gameplay for viewers.

The success of the opening night of the TGL tournament demonstrates the appeal of the unique format and the star power of players like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. The combination of virtual and traditional golf elements in a competitive setting has captured the interest of fans and viewers, with high viewership numbers indicating a strong start to the tournament. With upcoming matches featuring top golfers, the TGL tournament is poised to continue attracting a large audience and maintaining its momentum throughout the season.
