Fred Couples, known as “Boom Boom” in the golf world, has been a beloved figure in pro golf for years due to his smooth swing and powerful shots. Born on October 3, 1959, he celebrated his 65th birthday in 2024. Over the course of his career, Couples has amassed an impressive list of achievements, including 15 PGA Tour wins, with one of the most notable victories being the 1992 Masters. He also secured two wins at the Players Championship in 1984 and 1996. In his 622nd start on the PGA Tour, he claimed his last victory at the 2003 Shell Houston Open before transitioning to the PGA Tour Champions, where he won 14 times in 153 starts. His most recent Champions win was in 2022, when he scored 12 birdies and closed with an impressive 60.

In 2023, Couples made history by becoming the oldest golfer to make the cut at the Masters. Ahead of the 2024 tournament, he had initially planned to retire if he shot an 80 or higher in the first round. However, after shooting exactly 80, he changed his mind and declared his intention to compete in the tournament in 2025 and potentially in 2026. Couples’ announcement undoubtedly pleased fans of the sport, especially those who frequent Augusta National, where the Masters is held. In 2001, Couples made headlines when he revealed that he was the only Masters champion who had not donated a club to the Club. He eventually found the driver he used during his winning year, a MacGregor Eye 85 with a persimmon wood head.

In 2010, Couples made a fashion statement by wearing a pair of Ecco Street golf shoes at the Masters, earning him acclaim as a style icon in the golfing community. Aside from his individual accomplishments, Couples has also contributed to team events by serving as a vice captain at the Ryder Cup in 2020 and 2023 and as the U.S. captain at the Presidents Cup in 2009, 2011, and 2013, leading the U.S. team to victory in all three instances. As a result, he is a well-respected figure in both individual and team golf competitions. To celebrate his illustrious career, let’s take a look at some photos of Fred Couples through the years.

In 2013, Couples was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, marking a significant milestone in his career. The emotional ceremony solidified his status as one of the most accomplished and respected golfers in the sport’s history. Throughout his career, Couples has garnered numerous accolades and accolades for his contributions to the game. From his memorable victories at prestigious tournaments to his role as a mentor and leader in team events, Couples has left an indelible mark on the world of golf.
