Get in the Game at The Rink: Your Ultimate Hockey Fan Experience at RBC Canadian Open

The RBC Canadian Open has become known for its unique and exciting hockey-themed hole, dubbed The Rink, which combines Canada’s two favorite pastimes: golf and hockey. The concept was first introduced seven years ago and has since become an integral part of the tournament. The hole is set up with hockey-style boards on both sides, goalie helmets as tee markers, a goal on the tee, and an ice-resurfacing machine nearby, creating a fun and engaging atmosphere for both players and fans.

As players arrive at The Rink, they are greeted with a lively crowd singing Canada’s national anthem and popular hockey chants and songs, such as “Hey, Baby!” and “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” The atmosphere is reminiscent of the famous 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course during the WM Phoenix Open, but with a unique Canadian twist. The players have embraced the theme by wearing their favorite hockey jerseys, adding to the festive spirit of the hole.

The idea for The Rink was originally suggested by the executive director of Golf Saskatchewan as a way to celebrate both golf and hockey, two beloved sports in Canada. It made its debut at Glenn Abbey in 2017 and has continued to grow in popularity ever since. Tournament director Bryan Crawford noted that the idea has exceeded all expectations and has become a highlight of the RBC Canadian Open for both players and fans.

The Rink has also been introduced at the Canadian Women’s Open, with players like Brooke Henderson and Nelly Korda wearing their favorite hockey jerseys on the tee. Volunteer marshals even dress as referees, adding to the immersive experience for spectators. Despite the lively and energetic atmosphere, the fans at The Rink remain respectful and controlled, creating a fun and entertaining environment for all involved.

The success of The Rink highlights the appeal of incorporating unique and creative elements into professional golf tournaments. It provides fans with a memorable and interactive experience while also showcasing the fun and festive side of the sport. The RBC Canadian Open has successfully merged two of Canada’s most popular pastimes, golf, and hockey, into a one-of-a-kind spectacle that continues to delight players and spectators alike.
