Getting Personal with Jordan Spieth: A Look at His Wrist Surgery Through Five Questions

Jordan Spieth recently underwent surgery on his left wrist, which has been bothering him since late 2017. The injury has been causing his wrist to dislocate multiple times since February of the current year. Spieth shared the extent of the injury during an interview on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio, where he revealed that the dislocation would occur shortly before his tee time, forcing him to put the tendon back in place. He even considered withdrawing from the John Deere Classic in July due to the pain.

Despite the ongoing injury, Spieth continued to play through the season, aiming to make it into the top 50 in the FedEx Cup. However, he finished in 63rd place at the BMW Championship and decided to have surgery immediately. The surgery was termed a success, and Spieth is optimistic about his recovery. He may not be able to take full swings until mid-November, preventing him from participating in any December events as tune-ups.

Spieth had initially hoped to return for the Hero World Challenge or PNC Championship in December but now aims to be ready for the PGA Tour’s return in Hawaii in January at the Sony Open. He mentioned that this wrist injury has been bothering him for a while and believes that the surgery will address the root cause of the problem. Despite the challenges ahead in terms of recovery, Spieth is looking forward to the day when he can play without any issues and be back to his best form.

The injury had been affecting Spieth off the golf course more than during playing, causing discomfort particularly with ground impact shots and upslope shots. He tried not to let it affect his performance on the course but realized that it was hindering his game over the past year. With the surgery now behind him, Spieth is hopeful that he can return to his previous level of play once he completes the necessary rehab and recovery process.

Spieth is currently in the early stages of recovery, starting with passive physical therapy to regain range of motion in his wrist. He has been told that he should be able to start full swings around 12 weeks post-surgery, aiming to be game-ready by the new year. The biggest challenge for him during this recovery period will be slowly building back his strength and ensuring that he does not rush the process. Despite the uncertainty of the timeline, Spieth remains positive about his chances of returning to competitive play in the near future.
