Golfer drinks three beers before playoff at Rocket Mortgage Classic Monday qualifier and secures spot in first PGA Tour event

Nick Bienz’s journey to the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic started with a nail-biting playoff at The Orchards Golf Club in Washington, Michigan. Five golfers, including Bienz, carded an impressive 7-under 65, but only four spots were up for grabs. As a result, a 5-for-4 playoff ensued, with Bienz facing off against Danny Guise, Angelo Giantsopoulos, Brandon Berry, and Beau Breault. To calm his nerves before the playoff, Bienz chose to enjoy three cold beers, a unique approach that seemed to work in his favor.

Throughout the eight-hole playoff, Bienz relied on his favorite club, the driver, to secure his spot in the tournament. In a dramatic finish, Beau Breault was eliminated after failing to match two birdies on the final hole, leaving Bienz as one of the qualifiers for the Rocket Mortgage Classic. This opportunity marked Bienz’s first time participating in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event, a remarkable achievement for the aspiring golfer.

Following his successful qualification, Bienz faced the task of informing his employer at Golf Galaxy about his unexpected absence from work. With the tournament looming, Bienz jokingly acknowledged the need to call off work and attend the tournament instead. PGA Tour professional Bo Van Pelt took notice of Bienz’s achievement and made a public plea to Golf Galaxy, encouraging them to support Bienz with gear and a potential sponsorship deal.

Despite the fierce competition in the Monday qualifier, several notable players, including Robert Garrigus, Ryan Palmer, and David Gligic, fell short of securing a spot in the Rocket Mortgage Classic. This outcome highlighted the competitive nature of the qualifying process and the importance of performing at a high level to earn a place in prestigious tournaments like the Rocket Mortgage Classic. As Bienz prepared to make his debut on the PGA Tour stage, the golf community awaited his performance at Detroit Golf Club.

As Bienz anticipated learning his grouping for the tournament, the golf world buzzed with excitement over his unexpected success. Ryan French, the driving force behind Monday Q Info, showcased Bienz’s journey and highlighted the perseverance and skill required to excel in professional golf. With the support of fellow golf enthusiasts and professionals, Bienz embarked on a new chapter in his career, eager to make an impact at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and showcase his talents on a larger stage.
