Celebrating Golfweek’s 50th Anniversary: A Spotlight on Brentley Romine

As part of Golfweek’s 50th anniversary celebration, we’re reflecting on the brand’s rich legacy by featuring insights from former employees who have shaped its history. Today, we spotlight Brentley Romine, one of the standout college golf reporters during his time at the magazine.

Brentley Romine’s Tenure at Golfweek

  • Years Worked: 2011-2018

Role and Responsibilities

Brentley Romine served as Associate Editor at Golfweek. Initially, his role focused on covering junior golf and managing agate pages. Over the years, his responsibilities expanded to include:

  • College and amateur golf
  • Professional tournaments and major events
  • Coverage of NCAA championships, U.S. Amateurs, and the Walker Cup

By the end of his journey at Golfweek, Romine was covering multiple PGA Tour events each month and all major championships. “Those were busy times!” he recalls.

Current Role

Brentley Romine is now a Staff Writer at Golf Channel, continuing his passion for golf journalism.

Highlights from His Golfweek Experience

While Romine notes that there isn’t a single moment he points to as a highlight, he fondly remembers writing the first national stories on rising stars like Scottie Scheffler and Maverick McNealy during the U.S. Juniors. "It was pretty cool for a 20-year-old to do, and now, at 35, I’m still writing about those same players."

Golfweek dedicated extensive coverage to events like the U.S. Junior, highlighting the magazine’s commitment to the sport. “In the old Golfweek days, it felt like a big family of people who loved golf and storytelling,” Romine reflects. Mentorship and camaraderie were central to his experience, with leaders like Jeff Babineau and Steve Harmon, along with teammates such as Lance Ringler, Beth Ann Nichols, and Julie Williams being pivotal influences.

Another memorable moment for Romine was covering the 2018 Ryder Cup from his home in Florida, collaborating closely with his colleague Kevin as they live-blogged matches late into the night.

Memorable ‘Hair-on-Fire’ Moments

Romine shares amusing memories of his former managing editor, Craig Horan, affectionately known as “Stripes.” His memorable quotes included:

  • “I’m going to have them draw a cartoon of me with a little box like Lucy in the Peanuts comics that says, ‘Five cents a question.’”
  • “Next thing you know, we’re going to hear that they all got rabies from Sammy the Squirrel.”
  • “The only thing I know about the Barn Rat is there was a fire in a barn and all that was left was a dead rat.”

However, one pivotal moment stands out: the day Arnold Palmer passed away in 2016. Golfweek was the first to report the news, and the talented team quickly pivoted to produce a special edition dedicated to the legendary golfer.

Favorite Golf Course

Brentley’s favorite course? Augusta National. Thanks to Golfweek’s legacy, he got to play as a first-time attendee in 2016. Additionally, he cherishes numerous rounds played on the road with fellow colleague Adam Schupak, who has been a close mentor and friend.

Conclusion

Reflecting on Golfweek’s 50 years, we celebrate the outstanding contributions of former employees like Brentley Romine. Their passion for golf journalism has helped shape a thriving community devoted to the sport. As we recognize our legacy, we are proud of all our former colleagues and their achievements in the golf journalism arena.
