Padraig Harrington emerged victorious at the Simmons Bank Championship in Arkansas, keeping his chances alive for winning the PGA Tour Champions Charles Schwab Cup. With rounds of 67 and 65, he shared the 36-hole lead with Steven Alker on 12-under before finishing with a five-under 67 to secure a two-shot win over YE Yang on 17-under-par. This marked Harrington’s third win of the season and ninth win in 48 starts on the PGA Tour Champions, earning him $365,000 and bringing his season’s earnings to $1.63m.

Ranked 11th in the standings before the event, Harrington knew he needed a win to stay in contention for the season-long points race at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Phoenix. His victory catapulted him to fourth place on the points list, behind Ernie Els, Alker, and Stephen Ames, giving him control over his destiny. Harrington acknowledged the increasing competition from younger players joining the tour each year, emphasizing the importance of seizing his opportunity to win the Schwab Cup.

Despite his success on the PGA Tour Champions, Harrington still competes on the main tours and currently sits at 301st in the world ranking. His last win on the main tours came in 2016 at the Portugal Masters, making his recent victories on the Champions Tour even more satisfying. Harrington expressed his enjoyment of competing against his age-group peers, relishing the opportunity to relive past successes and feel the pressure of hitting crucial shots under tournament conditions.

The experienced golfer highlighted the unique appeal of the Champions Tour, where players can connect with fans, compete against familiar opponents, and experience the thrill of being in contention once again. Harrington emphasized the joy of feeling like a star on the tour, reliving past glories and experiencing the adrenaline of competing at a high level. This sentiment was echoed in his determination to make the most of his opportunities and continue chasing victories on both the PGA Tour Champions and the main tours.
