Harry Diamond Replacing Smylie Kaufman Could Have Led to Rory McIlroy Winning US Open

Former PGA Tour pro turned NBC Sports analyst Smylie Kaufman recently shared his thoughts on Rory McIlroy’s performance at the 2024 US Open, where McIlroy came close to ending his 10-year Major drought. Despite being in a strong position, McIlroy faltered on the final holes, ultimately allowing Bryson DeChambeau to claim victory. Kaufman believes that McIlroy’s mistakes began on the par-3 15th hole when he chose the wrong club, leading to a bogey that could have been avoided with a different strategy.

Kaufman suggested that McIlroy’s caddie, Harry Diamond, should have intervened and recommended a different club for the 15th hole. He believed that an 8-iron would have been a better choice than the 7-iron McIlroy used, especially given the conditions and the flag position. Kaufman highlighted the importance of making the right decisions under pressure in Major tournaments like the US Open, where small mistakes can have significant consequences.

In the aftermath of his disappointing finish at the US Open, there has been speculation about whether McIlroy should consider making changes to his caddie or approach. While Kaufman did not outright call for a change in caddie, he noted that Diamond rarely intervenes or overrules McIlroy’s decisions on the course. He emphasized the need for effective communication and decision-making between a player and their caddie, especially in high-stakes situations like Major championships.

Kaufman mentioned that McIlroy is known for his feel and intuition on the course, but that sometimes it is crucial for a caddie to step in and provide guidance, particularly when a player’s shot execution does not yield the desired results. Reflecting on McIlroy’s performance at the 15th hole, Kaufman stressed the importance of learning from mistakes and making adjustments for future tournaments to avoid similar errors in crucial moments.

Despite the discussions surrounding McIlroy’s performance and his caddie relationship, the Northern Irishman is set to return to competition at the Genesis Scottish Open. The tournament features a significant purse of $9 million and provides McIlroy with an opportunity to bounce back from his US Open disappointment. With the guidance of his caddie and a reassessment of his decision-making on the course, McIlroy will aim to put himself in contention for a Major title once again.
