Discovering the Warren Course: A Golfer’s Gem at Notre Dame

One of my most enlightening golfing experiences of 2025 unfolded at the Warren Course, situated on the picturesque campus of Notre Dame. Despite a less-than-stellar round, my immediate affection for the course made the visit unforgettable.
Unique Location and Atmosphere
Arriving on a Friday morning during Labor Day weekend, just after the welcome week, South Bend, Indiana, exuded a serene charm. This proximity to the university is one of the highlights of the Warren Course. Conveniently located across the street from Notre Dame’s recreation fields and merely a couple of hundred yards from Dunne Hall—named after the illustrious golf mogul Jimmy Dunne—the course boasts an accessibility that many university courses lack. For comparison, during my time at UW-Madison, I enjoyed University Ridge, but its nine-mile distance from campus made it feel isolated.
Renowned Amenities and Scheduling
Upon checking in at the pro shop, I was greeted by a steady stream of activity, including the husband of Muffet McGraw, a coaching icon at Notre Dame and an occasional golfer herself. This high demand for tee times—reservable two weeks in advance—comes as no surprise, especially with Texas A&M’s impending visit to Notre Dame Stadium.
On game days, the Warren Course offers a compelling all-in deal of $135 for a morning shotgun start, allowing golfers to enjoy the links before heading to the stadium. This thoughtful scheduling alleviates pressures on the staff and enhances the overall experience.
Play Like a Champion Today
Near the first tee, you’ll find the iconic "Play Like a Champion Today" sign, inviting golfers to channel their inner champion. The course layout challenges players to think strategically about their shots. The front nine begins with a draw off the first tee, followed by a fade on the second, and continues this dynamic pattern. This variation requires different clubs and strategies, keeping players engaged; the tree-lined fairways, though well-spaced, demand precision and skill.
Course Conditions and Rankings
Boasting top-notch conditions typical of one of the nation’s most prestigious athletic institutions, it’s no shock that the Warren Course ranks as one of the best in Indiana. It proudly holds the 85th spot in GOLF’s latest "Top 100 You Can Play". Each round played on this versatile course feels like a personal triumph, even if your score doesn’t reflect a commitment to challenge.
