International Series Cambodia, Backed by LIV Golf, Canceled Amid Political Tensions on Asian Tour

Political Tensions Lead to Cancellation of International Series Cambodia Golf Tournament

The Asian Tour’s highly anticipated International Series Cambodia tournament has officially been canceled, a decision reached amidst escalating political tensions at the Cambodia-Thailand border. This cancellation comes as a disappointment to many golf fans and players who were looking forward to the inaugural event, set to take place next month at the Chhun On Golf Club.

Background: Tensions Between Cambodia and Thailand

2023 has seen a rise in disputes between Cambodia and Thailand, particularly concerning their shared border—a situation that has tragically resulted in numerous casualties and the displacement of thousands. Reports indicated 40 deaths in July alone, following violent confrontations. Although a ceasefire has been agreed upon, the region remains unstable, raising concerns for the safety of athletes and attendees at the upcoming tournament.

International Series Cambodia Overview

The International Series Cambodia was to be a key event in the Asian Tour’s elevated series, featuring a prize pool of $2 million. As the event’s debut, it promised to be an exciting addition to the tour’s portfolio. The Asian Tour has confirmed the cancellation, which leaves fewer opportunities for players to earn crucial points in the lead-up to 2026, when LIV Golf opportunities become particularly significant.

LIV Golf Connection

One of the most exciting aspects of the International Series was its affiliation with LIV Golf, a circuit that has been stirring conversation in the golfing world. Notably, the premier player of the tournament was set to receive a full LIV card for 2026. This connection was expected to draw in several prominent players from both LIV Golf and the Asian Tour, making the cancellation even more impactful on those athletes’ seasons.

Impact on Golfing Community

The cancellation leaves a significant void in the 10-event series, reducing it to just nine events this year if no replacement event is organized. Thus far, four tournaments have already been played, with five still on schedule for the remainder of the year. Up next is the Jakarta International Championship, taking place from October 2, right before the originally scheduled Cambodian event.

Future Events in the Series

Following the Jakarta Championship, the International Series is set to resume later in October with the International Series Philippines, which will be followed by the LINK Hong Kong Open, Moutai Singapore Open, and finally the PIF Saudi International presented by SoftBank Investment Advisers. This lineup offers golf enthusiasts additional opportunities to catch top-level competitions, despite the loss of the Cambodian event.

Statements from Officials

Rahul Singh, Head of The International Series, expressed regret over the cancellation, noting, "In light of recent developments in the region, the International Series Cambodia will not take place as planned." Singh extended gratitude to various stakeholders, including the Royal Group and Chhun On Golf Club, for their support during the planning phase. He emphasized the International Series’ commitment to return to Cambodia when conditions improve.

Commitment to Cambodia

The Chairman of the tournament’s main sponsor, Royal Group, Neak Oknha Kith Meng, echoed this sentiment of solidarity and compassion. He remarked on the importance of supporting Cambodia and its people during these challenging times. "We look forward to the time for this sporting event to take place and serve as a platform for national pride and unity," Meng stated.

Looking Ahead: International Series Schedule for 2026

As the golfing community looks toward the future, the 2026 schedule for the International Series includes a variety of high-stakes tournaments:

  • Jan 30-Feb 2, 2026: International Series India
  • Mar 20-23, 2026: International Series Macau
  • May 8-11, 2026: International Series Japan
  • Jul 3-6, 2026: International Series Morocco
  • Oct 2-5, 2026: Jakarta International Championship
  • Oct 23-25, 2026: International Series Philippines
  • Oct 30-Nov 2, 2026: Hong Kong Open
  • Nov 6-9, 2026: Singapore Open
  • Nov 19-22, 2026: Saudi International

Conclusion: A Hope for Peace and Stability

Ultimately, while the International Series Cambodia has been canceled due to political instability, there remains hope for future tournaments. The commitment from both tour organizers and sponsors to return to Cambodia underscores the resilience of the sporting community, emphasizing that moments of conflict can give way to opportunities for growth and unity. As the situation evolves, fans and players alike look forward to the day when Cambodia can once again host world-class golf events.
