GOLF recently released its latest ranking of the Top 100 Courses in the U.S. (2024-25), which includes 11 newcomers. One of these newcomers is Old Barnwell, located in Aiken, South Carolina. Designed by architects Brian Schneider and Blake Conant, Old Barnwell opened its doors in 2023 and is already making waves in the golf community. The course sits on a sandy parcel of rolling land, where the firmness of the turf allows the design nuances to shine. With half-par holes scattered throughout, players are faced with strategic decisions from the first hole to the last.

The course features open but challenging greens, such as the par-5 opener and the short 4s at the 2nd and 14th holes, which are guarded by deep bunkers. Players also have the opportunity to utilize mounds and slopes to their advantage, like at the par-4 8th where the green is inverted L-shaped. Additionally, the centipede rough adds a heathland-like feel to the course, further enhancing the playing experience. Old Barnwell’s founder, Nick Schreiber, has established a club ethos of giving back to both the game and the community, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members.

According to GOLF’s raters, Old Barnwell is a visually and strategically compelling course that draws players in with its architectural creativity. The course offers a mix of whimsical and strategic elements, reminiscent of North Berwick. It is considered one of the most strategic new designs in the past 30 years, requiring thoughtful play and offering a unique experience on every round. The greens are bold but not overly severe, providing a challenge that can be enjoyed by players of all levels. Old Barnwell is the kind of course that can be played every day without getting bored, showcasing the variety and complexity of its design.

With its inclusion in the Top 100 Courses in the U.S., Old Barnwell has quickly become a must-play destination for golf enthusiasts. The course’s commitment to preserving classic design principles while adding a fresh twist has garnered praise from players and critics alike. The absence of overseeding contributes to the firmness of the turf, allowing the course’s features to stand out and provide a unique playing experience. From the challenging greens to the strategically placed bunkers, Old Barnwell offers a test of skill and strategy that will keep players coming back for more.

In addition to its exceptional design and playing conditions, Old Barnwell also stands out for its commitment to community and giving back to the game of golf. Founder Nick Schreiber’s vision of creating a club ethos focused on inclusivity and support has helped shape the culture of Old Barnwell. The club’s dedication to fostering a love for the game among its members and in the local community is evident in its programs and events. By prioritizing the values of sportsmanship, integrity, and camaraderie, Old Barnwell has established itself as not only a top-ranked course but also a vital part of the golfing community in Aiken, South Carolina.

Whether you’re a seasoned golfer looking for a challenging round or a newcomer to the game seeking a welcoming environment, Old Barnwell offers something for everyone. The course’s strategic layout and unique design elements provide an engaging experience for players of all skill levels.
