Bhutan: The World’s Happiest Golf Destination

Introduction: A Unique Arrival

When arriving at Paro Airport, Bhutan, one is instantly enveloped in an ethereal serenity. Nestled at 7,333 feet among towering Himalayan peaks, the airport is famous for its scenic approach. Flying in on a Bhutan Airlines Airbus A319 feels like navigating through a video game, where the landscape morphs into stunning green terraced hills and majestic dzongs (fortress-monasteries). This breathtaking journey is unforgettable, especially when coupled with the thrill of anticipation; I have a tee time scheduled for tomorrow!

The Heart of Happiness: Bhutan’s Philosophy

Bhutan, a kingdom of roughly 780,000 people, stands out not just for its craggy terrains and cultural richness but also for a philosophy that prioritizes Gross National Happiness (GNH). Instituted in the 1970s by royal decree, GNH goes beyond material wealth, emphasizing the importance of family, community, and environmental integrity. More than just a catchphrase, GNH influences policy-making and daily life, underscored by the nation’s dedication to maintaining ecological harmony—60% of Bhutan remains forested, and all mountains are deemed sacred.

Bhutan’s Golf Scene: A Hidden Gem

Despite its vibrant tradition of culture and happiness, Bhutan also boasts four golf courses that offer more than just a game; they introduce players to an experience intertwined with spirituality and natural beauty. My curiosity about Bhutanese golf was piqued during a trip to Nepal back in 2022. At an altitude of 15,239 feet lies the Mustang Golf Course, the world’s highest. Amongst conversations with fellow golfers, Bhutan was discussed with reverence, highlighted by the famed Bhutan Open.

Royal Thimphu Golf Club: The Game Begins

Arriving at the Royal Thimphu Golf Club, I meet Phuntsho "PG" Gyaltshen, the president of the Bhutan Golf Association. Observing golfers relax on the terrace over butter tea, I learn that conditions and camaraderie here are as rich as any lush course in Scotland. In Bhutan, the golfing community may be small—about 300 golfers—but their passion is palpable. Tshendra Dorji, Bhutan’s best golfer, holds a remarkable +5 handicap and serves as the national coach, nurturing the emerging golf talent in this unique nation.

Golf Courses of Bhutan: An Overview

Bhutan is home to four primary golf courses, all set above 7,500 feet. Each course is a unique blend of challenge and scenic beauty, including:

  • Royal Thimphu Golf Club (established in 1972)
  • Drakpoi Golf Course (owned by the Royal Bhutan Army)
  • India House Eco Park (located within the Indian Embassy grounds)
  • Haa Nature Park (about two hours from Thimphu)

Each course embodies a commitment to GNH principles and crafting holistic experiences for players.

The Royal Wedding Tournament at Drakpoi

Driving to Drakpoi Golf Club on the northern edge of Thimphu, I marvel at landscapes that evoke vibes of Colorado or Switzerland. The course is mostly enjoyed by military generals, yet offers a unique opportunity for civilian members to practice before competitive events like the Royal Wedding Tournament held in October. The majestic Kabisa Valley envelops the course, enriching every moment and tee shot.

Unraveling Spiritual Connections on the Course

Bhutanese golf offers unique spiritual dimensions. Fairways are adorned with ancient stupas, and golfers often aim at centuries-old religious monuments while Tee-ing off. The 9th hole at Royal Thimphu features an imposing 167-foot gold Buddha, allowing players to ground their games with reflections of spirituality.

The Eclectic India House Eco Park

Moving on, I experience the distinctiveness of India House Eco Park. The course path captivated me with its unpredictability. Featuring tightly spaced holes and creative design, it feels like navigating someone’s secret garden. Despite its affiliation with the Indian Embassy, the Eco Park remains open to visitors during specific tournaments, such as the India House Open held annually in November.

Local Initiatives: GNH in Action

GNH is more than a slogan; it influences every aspect of life, including environmental stewardship. Bhutan is net carbon negative and has a national ban on plastic bags. The government is actively planning a "Mindfulness City" designed to encourage holistic living while celebrating its rich biodiversity. The mountains echo with the sounds of sacred symbols—spiritual flags flying, and other artifacts signify a deep connection to nature and community.

Bhutan’s Future in Golf: Paving a Path

Although Bhutan has yet to carve a niche on the international golfing scene, ambitions are high. The Bhutan Golf Federation is tirelessly working towards honing the nation’s talent with hopes of producing a winner in prestigious events like the Asia-Pacific Amateur, which offers pathways to grand tournaments such as the Masters. Bhutan sees promise in its young players, while systematic coaching during school holidays nurtures the sport at grassroots levels.

Conclusion: Your Chance to Experience Bhutan

Plan Your Visit: if you’re intrigued by the invitation to play golf amidst Bhutan’s stunning vistas, travel is quite feasible. The prime months for golfing are April-June and September-October. Various airlines offer routes via Kathmandu, Nepal, or other major cities.

Visit Bhutan’s Golfing Landscape

To embark on your own Bhutan golfing journey:

  1. Contact the Bhutan Golf Federation for information or to arrange a tee time.
  2. Explore accommodations from budget-friendly to luxury.
  3. Engage with local culture through sightseeing—hiking to the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery or indulging in local delicacies like ema datse.

Final Thoughts

Bhutan beckons not only with its golf but with an ethos steeped in values of happiness and spirituality. Whether you’re standing on a golf course amidst breathtaking scenery or hiking to sacred monasteries, the landscape harbors a unique invitation for joy and reflection. What can we learn from this extraordinarily happy land? Golf may be seen as just a game but in Bhutan, it’s a glimpse into a profound cultural connection that unites players in their pursuit of happiness.

Explore Bhutan and discover the exquisite blend of sport, spirituality, and nature that makes this kingdom one of the most intriguing destinations on Earth.
