In an impressive display of resilience, American golfer Nelly Korda sealed her victory at the LPGA’s season-opening Tournament of Champions in Orlando, despite facing "brutal" weather conditions. The conclusion of the event marked Korda’s 16th LPGA title and her first since November 2024.
Korda completed her third round on Saturday, battling freezing temperatures and strong winds. She described the final two holes of her remarkable eight-under-par round of 64 as "probably the hardest holes I’ve ever played in professional golf." Participants resorted to wearing ear muffs and ski caps to stave off the cold at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club.
Holding a three-shot lead heading into the final round, Korda maintained her advantage over South Korea’s Amy Yang, who was one of six players needing to finish their rounds on Sunday. Yang achieved a par on her last two holes, completing a round of 69, finishing the tournament with a score of ten under par, three shots behind the leader.
Due to the adverse weather, including ongoing poor conditions on the practice range and forecasts for further rain, tournament organizers made the decision to cancel the final round after 54 holes. LPGA Chief Tour Business and Operations Officer Ricki Lasky explained, "The ground was really hard and it was changing the trajectory of their shots as players were practicing. We tried to take as much time as we could to get all 72 holes into play. We couldn’t. We had to make the really hard decision to call it after 54."
Canada’s Brooke Henderson claimed third place with a score of seven under par, following a strong third-round performance of 66.
Reflecting on her victory, the 27-year-old Korda shared her motivations during the off-season, stating, "I really, over the off season, was motivated to get back in the winner’s circle. Today was a little bit nerve-wracking, especially waiting for what the final say was going to be."
As the LPGA season unfolds, Korda’s triumph sets a promising tone, showcasing not just skill but also the determination needed to excel in professional golf amidst challenging circumstances.
