Lee Trevino warns against three common mistakes golfers make during their backswing.

Lee Trevino, a legendary ball-striker and six-time major winner, recently shared insight into three common “bad habits” that golfers commit on their backswing. In a video posted on the Golf Teachers App Instagram page, Trevino highlighted the mistakes of breaking the wrists too soon, taking the club too far outside, and breaking the right elbow and pulling the club back inside. He emphasized the importance of a correct backswing, which involves matching the left shoulder with the clubhead and being mindful of hip movement.

Trevino stressed the importance of maintaining proper alignment from the left shoulder to the clubhead during the backswing, as well as adjusting hip movement to control the club’s path. By closing the hips, golfers can take the club back inside, while opening up the stance allows for a straighter or slightly outside path. Trevino’s advice is aimed at helping golfers improve their ball-striking and achieve a more consistent and effective swing.

In a separate conversation at the 2021 Berenberg Invitational, Trevino offered advice for golfers struggling to hit the ball solidly. He compared the arms to tree limbs attached to the body’s trunk, emphasizing the importance of understanding the swing radius and monitoring the space between the golfer and the ball. Trevino highlighted the significance of ball position in achieving a compressed strike on the golf ball and sending it straighter.

One of the key mistakes Trevino identified was playing the ball too far forward in the stance, causing the arms to come up prematurely and resulting in low and off-target shots. By adjusting the ball position slightly back in the stance, golfers can improve their swing mechanics and make solid contact with the ball. Trevino’s advice is grounded in his experience as a professional golfer and renowned ball-striker, offering valuable insights for players looking to enhance their performance on the course.

Trevino’s emphasis on proper backswing mechanics and ball position underscores the importance of fundamentals in golf. By addressing common mistakes and offering practical tips for improvement, he provides golfers with actionable advice to refine their swing technique and optimize their performance. Through his wealth of experience and expertise, Trevino continues to be a trusted source of guidance for golfers seeking to elevate their game and achieve better results on the course.
