Lee Westwood opts not to answer LIV question during U.S. Senior Open hunt

Lee Westwood made his debut at the U.S. Senior Open at Newport Country Club, a historic and challenging course in Rhode Island. The course, dating back to the 1800s, has a rich history as one of the founding member clubs of the USGA and has hosted numerous prestigious events. Despite its age, Newport CC still poses a tough test for players, especially when the wind picks up.

Westwood had a solid opening round at the U.S. Senior Open, shooting a four-under 66 despite the wind picking up towards the end of his round. This is Westwood’s first appearance on the PGA Tour since joining the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit in 2022 and resigning from the DP World Tour in 2023. Despite his limited global appearances, Westwood showed that he still has what it takes to compete at a high level.

After battling glandular fever last year, Westwood mentioned that he is feeling much better and back to his old self. With four birdies and an eagle in his opening round, Westwood finds himself in contention at the U.S. Senior Open. Although most senior tour events are only 54 holes, the USGA uses 72 holes to determine a champion at this event, prompting questions about Westwood’s ability to endure the full tournament.

When asked about lasting 72 holes, Westwood humorously mentioned that playing in trousers was more bothersome for him than completing the full tournament. Despite his lighthearted response, Westwood’s performance in the opening round indicates that he has a great opportunity to contend for the title at Newport CC. With his experience and skill, Westwood could be a strong contender as the tournament progresses.

As Westwood continues to compete at the U.S. Senior Open, golf fans will be eager to see if he can maintain his form and potentially walk away with the trophy. His debut at this prestigious event has already shown that he still has the game to compete at a high level, despite his reduced schedule on the global golf circuit. With his health back on track and his skills on display, Westwood could be a player to watch as the tournament unfolds at Newport CC.
