Lexi Thompson to forgo 2024 Evian Championship

Lexi Thompson, currently ranked 33rd in the world, will not be participating in the 2024 Evian Championship, marking her continued absence from the fourth women’s Major of the season. Thompson’s last appearance at the championship was in 2019, where she missed the cut for the second consecutive year and expressed her frustration on Instagram. Despite her initial post being deleted and clarified, Thompson has chosen not to return to the Evian Resort since then. She has had mixed results at the event, with a third-place finish, a T10 result, and a runner-up finish in her first three appearances, followed by T22 and T48 finishes in 2016 and 2017.

Thompson is one of seven top-50 players who will not be participating in the Evian Championship, including high-profile names like Ruoning Yin and Nelly Korda. Korda, who sustained a dog bite recently, will be making her comeback after missing the Aramco Team Series London. Meanwhile, Charley Hull is expected to compete despite having to withdraw from the London event due to a shoulder issue and illness. Thompson’s decision not to play in the Major is surprising given her recent improved form after announcing her retirement from full-time professional golf at the end of the season.

After struggling with four missed cuts in seven starts earlier in the year, Thompson announced her intention to retire later in the season. However, she has since seen a resurgence in form, finishing T2 at the Meijer LPGA Classic, T9 at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, and T8 at the Dow Championship alongside Brooke Henderson. Despite her improved performances, Thompson remains firm in her decision to retire and is focusing on giving her best in every event. She has expressed contentment with her decision and is taking each day as it comes, not looking too far ahead or changing her plans.

Thompson’s recent success has led to speculation about whether a victory in a Major or significant event could potentially alter her decision to retire. However, Thompson has reiterated her contentment with her choice and is committed to continuing to work hard and improve in her remaining events. Following her strong finishes in recent tournaments, Thompson is looking to build on her momentum and continue striving for success in the upcoming competitions. With a few weeks off after the Dow Championship, Thompson plans to continue working on her game and hopes to keep improving as she competes in her final season as a full-time professional golfer.
