Looking Back: A Timeline of Events Since the LIV Golf-PGA Tour ‘Framework’ Shook the World One Year Ago

The merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf announced on June 6, 2023, left golf fans stunned. Negotiations between the two entities had been ongoing for weeks, bringing together the traditional PGA Tour with the upstart LIV Golf, financed by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund. This alliance sparked controversy due to the history of player poaching, lawsuits, and insults between the two tours.

Initially projected to be finalized by December 31, the merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf faced delays and roadblocks, leaving the parties no closer to a resolution. Despite a brief cease-fire, tensions between members of both sides persisted, with LIV Golf continuing to poach PGA Tour stars. Seth Waugh, CEO of the PGA of America, expressed concerns about the negative impact the rivalry was having on the sport.

Players such as Rory McIlroy believed that the PGA Tour’s partnership with the PIF would ultimately benefit the game. McIlroy emphasized that the partnership did not involve LIV Golf and would help protect the aspirational nature of the PGA Tour. However, trust in PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan dwindled among some players, with Jon Rahm questioning the management’s decisions.

The agreement between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf was scrutinized on Capitol Hill, with concerns raised about antitrust violations. Testimonies from PGA Tour officials shed light on the contentious negotiations, including proposals for players like Tiger Woods and McIlroy to have ownership in LIV Golf franchises. Tiger Woods later led a group of players in signing demands to gain more control over the PGA Tour.

As negotiations continued, tensions remained high, leading to public disagreements between players and officials. The announcement of a major investor in the PGA Tour through Strategic Sports Group added complexity to the situation. LIV Golf signed top players like Tyrrell Hatton, while significant changes within the PGA Tour policy board, including Jimmy Dunne’s resignation, posed further challenges.

Despite ongoing negotiations and reports of progress, a year after the merger announcement, a final deal between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf is yet to be reached. Uncertainty looms over the future of both tours, with negotiations still ongoing. Golf fans and stakeholders await a resolution to the long-standing dispute between the two leagues to bring stability and unity back to the sport.
