Ryann O’Toole’s Determined Path: Securing Her LPGA Tour Card in Alabama

In an unexpected twist to her December plans, Ryann O’Toole found herself competing in Alabama this past week, battling for her LPGA Tour card. This decision proved pivotal as the seasoned golfer demonstrated an impressive comeback.

O’Toole’s Journey Through Q-Series Final Qualifying

At 38, O’Toole, a proud UCLA alum known for her stint on Golf Channel’s "Big Break," showcased her resilience on the greens. After a transformative week at the LPGA Q-Series Final Qualifying in Mobile, she shot a remarkable bogey-free 65, featuring seven birdies. Over the 72-hole event, shortened due to inclement weather, she achieved a tied-for-third finish at 11 under par, emerging as the top American qualifier. The competition allowed for the top 25 players, along with ties, to earn their coveted tour cards, and O’Toole’s performance placed her among the 31 golfers to succeed at the historic Robert Trent Jones Trail Magnolia Grove.

Reflecting on Past Challenges and Present Pressures

Despite her impressive career with 20 top-10 finishes, O’Toole faced a challenging season in 2025. Making the cut in only half of her 16 starts and failing to achieve any top-10 finishes placed her at 137th in the CME Points Rankings. “The last time I was here [at Q-Series] was 2014, and I told myself after that week, I never want to have to be back,” O’Toole admits. Experiencing the mental and emotional toll this competition takes, she acknowledges the stress of trying to regain her status. The combination of cold weather and early delays added an extra layer to an already demanding week.

The Emotional Rollercoaster of Professional Golf

"With 15 years on tour, there are mixed emotions going into it," O’Toole reflects on her apprehension about entering Q School again. She contemplated whether to move on to a different chapter in her life rather than face the uncertainty of not having full tour status come January. “It would be really weird to start January 1 and go, ‘What do you mean I don’t have full status?’” This candid expression sheds light on the emotional stakes involved in today’s fiercely competitive golfing landscape.

A New Contender: Helen Briem

Among those who shone at the LPGA Q-Series was German golfer Helen Briem. With a stellar four-under 68, Briem secured medalist honors with an impressive total score of 13 under. At just 20 years old, she is set to transition to the LPGA after competing on the Ladies European Tour. Briem described her feelings after qualifying as overwhelming, stating, “Right now, I’m a bit lost for words. I entered this week with not a lot of expectations, but overall, I’m really happy that I am able to play LPGA next year, and that’s really cool.”

The Return of a Major Champion

Hinako Shibuno, a popular figure in women’s golfing and the champion of the 2019 AIG Women’s British Open, also regained her tour card, finishing just above the cut line at five under par. Having faced challenges throughout her season—making only 10 cuts in 23 starts—Shibuno’s triumphant return is a testament to her skill and determination. With only one top-10 finish this season, this achievement is set to reinvigorate her career.

Another Veteran’s Comeback: Jodi Ewart Shadoff

Jodi Ewart Shadoff, a former European Solheim Cup competitor, also made headlines by re-earning her LPGA card. The 37-year-old secured her place in the tour by shooting 71, finishing among the final eight players tied for 24th. With her lone LPGA title won in 2022 and notable finishes in three of the tour’s five majors, Shadoff’s successful comeback adds another inspiring narrative to this season’s qualifiers.

Missed Opportunities for Young Talents

However, the road to the LPGA is often unforgiving. Notable young golfer Gianna Clemente, only 17 years old and a recent professional, narrowly missed qualifying after falling three shots off the cut. Despite her efforts, she could not overcome the pressure of the competition. Another hopeful, Kim Kaufman, recently recovering from breast cancer treatment, faced challenges and finished at four over, falling short of her goal.

A Competitive Field of Aspirants

Several other promising talents, including standout collegiate players, also faced disappointment at this year’s qualifying event. Megan Schofill, the 2023 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion and Auburn alum, finished at even par. Meanwhile, Adela Cernousek from Texas A&M, who won the NCAA individual championship, concluded her chances at 16 over. Other notable names, including USC’s Amari Avery and Wake Forest’s Rachel Kuehn, did not meet the qualifying requirements either.

The Future of Women’s Golf

In summary, the LPGA Q-Series Final Qualifying event not only highlighted the resilience of seasoned players like O’Toole and Shibuno but also showcased the promise of newcomers like Briem. As the landscape of women’s golf continues to evolve, the challenges and triumphs faced at this level remain a testament to the spirit of competition. As players like O’Toole battle to maintain their status and achieve their dreams, fans can expect thrilling narratives and performances in the upcoming LPGA season.

Through perseverance and skill, the world of women’s golf remains a dynamic stage for established stars and aspiring athletes alike. As O’Toole and her fellow competitors gear up for the LPGA Tour, the excitement builds for what promises to be an exhilarating 2025 season.
