Lynch argues that the FedEx Cup playoffs lack the excitement of traditional playoffs, but proposes a simple change that could make them must-watch television.

The FedEx Cup playoffs system has been subject to continuous modifications since its inception in 2007, with the goal of better aligning the postseason with the results of the regular season. Unlike traditional playoffs in major sports, the PGA Tour’s playoffs are designed to reward consistent performance throughout the year rather than hot streaks in the postseason. This has led to debates about whether the FedEx Cup truly constitutes playoffs or a season-long race.

The PGA Tour’s approach to the playoffs aims to engineer outcomes that reflect regular season performance, rather than embracing the volatility and shock upsets typically associated with playoffs. Points accumulated throughout the regular season are carried over to the playoffs to determine starting positions at the Tour Championship, favoring players who have performed consistently well all year. However, critics argue that this approach detracts from the excitement and unpredictability that make playoffs in other sports compelling.

One proposal to inject more excitement into the FedEx Cup playoffs involves transitioning to a match-play format for the final rounds. This would involve reducing the field to 16 players for the Tour Championship and implementing a head-to-head bracket to determine the champion. By shifting away from a points-based system and embracing a more direct competition format, the playoffs could potentially become more engaging for fans and players alike.

The proposal also suggests moving the BMW Championship out west to increase viewership and interest in the event. By creating a more dynamic and compelling postseason format, the PGA Tour could attract a larger audience and generate excitement around the culmination of the FedEx Cup playoffs. This shift towards a match-play format could eliminate some of the criticisms surrounding the current points-based system and enhance the overall viewing experience.

The proposed changes are aimed at bridging the gap between a season-long race and traditional playoffs, offering a compromise that values regular season accomplishments while introducing elements of unpredictability and excitement. By reimagining the structure of the FedEx Cup playoffs, the PGA Tour could create a more engaging and competitive postseason format that appeals to both fans and players. Implementing these changes could elevate the status of the FedEx Cup playoffs and solidify its place as a marquee event on the golf calendar.
