Master Valspar Gear: Young’s Clubs and New Putters

Hello, Daily Duffer readers! Sarah Chen here, your golf instruction editor, always ready to help you unlock your best game. This past week, like many of you, I was glued to the Valspar Championship, watching the pros navigate the challenging Copperhead Course. Beyond the incredible shots and nail-biting finishes, there’s always so much we can learn from how these top players approach their game, especially when it comes to their equipment choices and how those choices influence their performance.

One of the fascinating aspects of professional golf is seeing the constant evolution of equipment. It’s not just about getting the newest driver; it’s about meticulous adjustments and understanding how every piece of gear impacts your swing and your score. This pursuit of the perfect fit, especially in the short game, offers invaluable lessons for every amateur golfer.

The Putter Predicament: Finding Your Feel

The putting green is where many rounds are won or lost, and nothing is more personal than your putter. We heard some intriguing insights coming out of the Valspar regarding putters, specifically from Andrew Novak.

“Hear from Andrew Novak about his switch to an unreleased Odyssey putter”

This tells us a lot. A “switch” implies a change from something he was already using, and an “unreleased” model suggests cutting-edge technology or a very specific design. For us, the take-home message isn’t necessarily to rush out and buy the newest, unreleased putter. Instead, it’s about understanding that even professional players are constantly seeking a putter that gives them the best feel and the most consistent roll. What feels right to you is paramount.

Why is feel so important in putting? Because putting is largely about touch and distance control. A putter that feels balanced, that gives you clear feedback on off-center strikes, and that presents the ball to you exactly how you like it, can dramatically improve your confidence and consistency. When you feel connected to your putter, you can better trust your instincts and make a smooth, accelerating stroke.

Try this: The “Blind Putt” Feel Drill

Here’s a way to assess your putter’s feel: grab three golf balls and find a flat section of the practice green. Place a target (a coin or another ball) about 10-15 feet away. Close your eyes or turn your back to the hole and just feel the stroke, focusing only on contact and how the putter head travels through impact. After you hit each putt, open your eyes to see how close you got. Do you feel centered contact? Does the putter feel stable? Repeat this a few times with your current putter. Then, if you have access, try it with a different putter. You might be surprised at how different certain putters feel, even if they look similar.

Wedge Wisdom: Crafting Your Short Game Arsenal

Beyond putting, the area around the green is another scoring hotbed. The choice of wedges – their loft, bounce, and grind – is highly personal and critical for tour players. We received some unique insight into Cam Young’s wedge setup from Vokey Wedge Rep Aaron Dill:

“Hear from Nick Geyer about Cam Young’s equipment changes and Vokey Wedge Rep Aaron Dill on Cam Young’s wedge setup”

While the article doesn’t detail Cam Young’s specific wedge setup here, the mere mention underscores the importance of a finely-tuned wedge game at the professional level. What does this mean for you? It means thinking critically about your own wedge game. Do you know the exact yardages for your 50, 75, and 100-yard shots? Do you have the right wedges in your bag to handle different lies and course conditions?

Many amateur golfers carry standard wedges that came with their iron set. But often, adding a specific lob wedge (60 degrees) or a gap wedge (50-52 degrees) with the right bounce can transform your short game. Bounce refers to the angle created between the leading edge of the wedge and the lowest part of the sole. A higher bounce is great for softer conditions or golfers with steeper attack angles, helping the club glide through the turf. Lower bounce is ideal for firm conditions or golfers with shallower attack angles.

Try this: The “Half-Swing Ladder” Drill for Wedges

Take your most-lofted wedge (your sand or lob wedge) and identify three distances: 25 yards, 50 yards, and 75 yards. For each distance, focus on making a consistent, compact swing:

  1. 25 Yards: Think of a swing where your hands only go back to roughly hip height. Focus on a smooth body rotation and letting the clubhead release naturally.
  2. 50 Yards: Your hands might go back to waist or chest height. Keep the tempo smooth and accelerate through the ball.
  3. 75 Yards: This is often a three-quarter swing. Your hands might go to shoulder height.

The goal isn’t just to hit the numbers, but to develop a consistent swing shape and feel for each distance. Practice these until you know exactly how much swing produces each yardage. This consistency will build immense confidence around the greens.

Beyond the Clubs: The Mental Game and Practice

While equipment is crucial, it’s only one piece of the puzzle. I tell my students that even the best clubs in the world won’t help if your mental game isn’t sharp or if your practice isn’t effective. The fact that pros like Andrew Novak and Cam Young are constantly refining their equipment suggests a deeper commitment to improvement. It highlights a mindset of continuous seeking and refinement, which is something we can all emulate.

Every golfer, from tour pros to weekend warriors, faces challenges on the course. Whether it’s a tricky lie, a long putt, or a tight shot into the green, how you approach these moments mentally is just as important as your physical technique. Instead of getting frustrated, see these challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. That’s the mindset of a true champion, and it’s a mindset you can cultivate too.

My teaching philosophy, developed over 15+ years of working with golfers of all handicaps, is that anyone can improve with proper instruction and a dedicated approach. So, next time you’re on the course or at the range, take a moment to consider not just “what” you’re doing, but “why” you’re doing it. Think about the feel of your clubs, the precision of your wedges, and the mental game you bring to each shot. These insights from the pros, coupled with purposeful practice, will undoubtedly lead to lower scores and more enjoyment on the course.
