Short par-4s are some of the most exciting holes in golf, providing legitimate birdie opportunities for high handicappers and eagle chances for more skilled players. However, the potential for making a bogey or worse is always present on these short holes, as they are often designed with dangerous spots. To take advantage of short par-4s, it is crucial to go in with the right strategy. In this edition of Play Smart, XXIO ambassador Nathalie Sheehan provides tips on how to best attack a risk-reward hole, using the 15th hole at Cabot Citrus Farms as an example.

The 15th hole at Cabot Citrus Farms is a quintessential short par-4, stretching just over 280 yards from the middle tees. With baked-out conditions, the hole plays even shorter, making it a prime opportunity for birdie. However, success on this hole is not guaranteed, as a miss in the wrong spot can lead to a bogey or worse. To excel on this type of hole, golfers need to keep a few key things in mind, starting with knowing their typical miss and being aware of potential trouble spots.

When attacking a short par-4, understanding where your typical miss lands is crucial. Golf is often a game of managing your worst shots, so knowing where your typical miss is can help you plan your strategy accordingly. Additionally, it is important to identify trouble areas on the hole and do your best to avoid them. On risk-reward holes, trouble often lies in the landing area for a driver, so it is essential to assess whether your typical miss could put you in danger. Adjust your strategy to ensure your miss stays away from trouble spots to increase your chances of making birdie.

Sheehan emphasizes the significance of avoiding trouble on risk-reward holes by steering clear of bunkering or penalty areas that could lead to a big number on the scorecard. By hitting your tee shot to a safe spot that keeps you away from trouble, you give yourself a better opportunity to make birdie with a wedge in hand. Implementing these steps into your process on short par-4s can help you make more birdies and eliminate those costly big numbers from your scorecard.

In conclusion, short par-4s offer exciting opportunities for birdies and eagle chances, but they also pose risks for high scores if approached incorrectly. By knowing your typical miss, identifying trouble spots, and strategically planning your tee shots to avoid trouble, you can optimize your chances of succeeding on short par-4s. With the right mindset and strategy, you can increase your birdie count and minimize the chances of making a big number on these challenging holes. Play smart and capitalize on the scoring opportunities that short par-4s present to improve your overall performance on the golf course.
