In the 2024 Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club, the challenging course caused some unexpected upsets with several prominent players missing the cut. Jordan Spieth, a three-time major champion, missed the cut for just the second time in 12 starts at the Memorial. Despite excelling in strokes gained off the tee, he struggled in scrambling and ultimately failed to advance to the weekend rounds.
Ben Griffin, who was initially planning to have eye surgery, managed to secure a spot in the field through the AON Swing 5. However, he shot 76-73 to miss the cut for the second consecutive year. His struggles on the green, ranking 69th in strokes gained putting, contributed to his early exit from the tournament.
Wyndham Clark, the defending U.S. Open champion, fell short at the Memorial with rounds of 77-72. This marked his second consecutive missed cut and third in his last five starts. His cold putter, ranking T-66 in strokes gained putting, prevented him from making the weekend rounds.
Matthieu Pavon, the winner of the Farmers Insurance Open, continued to struggle with his game as he missed his second straight cut at the Memorial. Despite being No. 12 in the FedEx Cup rankings, Pavon’s performance has declined with no top-10 finishes since February. A poor showing, including multiple doubles and a triple, led to his early exit from the tournament.
Patrick Cantlay, a two-time Memorial champion, experienced a surprising early departure from the tournament. It was the first time in eight starts at the Memorial that Cantlay missed the cut. Despite making five birdies on Friday, his struggles on and around the green, as well as off the tee, contributed to his uncharacteristic performance.
Justin Rose, whose maiden win was at the Memorial in 2010, had a disappointing showing with rounds of 80-73. Rose, who has a strong record at the tournament, struggled in all aspects of his game, ultimately missing the cut for the second consecutive year. His performance was far from his usual standard, ranking last in several key statistical categories.
Rickie Fowler, known for his past success at the Memorial, had a forgettable week with a disastrous round of 82. Despite being a runner-up in previous years, Fowler’s struggles on the course resulted in finishing at 10-over and last in the field. His inconsistent play this season has led to a decline in his FedEx Cup ranking, with only one top-25 finish to his credit.
