The 2024 U.S. Open is coming down to the wire, with a crowded leaderboard and some of the biggest names in golf vying for the title. Bryson DeChambeau, the 54-hole leader, is looking to claim his second U.S. Open title, but he has stiff competition from the likes of Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay, Mathieu Pavon, Russell Henley, Hideki Matsuyama, and Tony Finau. With so many talented players in contention, it’s unclear who will emerge victorious by the end of the day.

In the event of a tie after 72 holes, the U.S. Open playoff format comes into play. Since 2018, the USGA has implemented a two-hole aggregate playoff format to ensure that a champion is crowned by Sunday evening. This format was put in place to address the importance of concluding play on Sunday and awarding the trophy to the champion. If the players in the playoff finish the two extra holes tied, sudden death will determine the winner.

If a playoff is needed at Pinehurst, it would be the first at the U.S. Open since 2008 when Tiger Woods defeated Rocco Mediate in an 18-hole playoff. The new two-hole aggregate playoff format aims to make things simpler and ensure a quicker resolution to determine the champion. The playoff holes will take place on the 17th and 18th holes, which have been playing as the seventh and 14th most difficult holes throughout the week.

The anticipation is high as the leaders approach the back nine of the U.S. Open, with DeChambeau still holding onto his lead but facing strong challenges from his closest competitors. McIlroy, seeking his second U.S. Open title, and Cantlay, aiming for a breakthrough victory, are just a few strokes behind. Pavon, Henley, Matsuyama, and Finau are also in contention and looking to make a late surge to claim the championship.

The tension is palpable as the players navigate Pinehurst in the final round of the U.S. Open, knowing that every shot could make a difference in the outcome. With the title on the line and a field of talented contenders, fans can expect an exciting finish to one of golf’s most prestigious events. Whether DeChambeau can hold onto his lead or if one of his challengers will rise to the occasion remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – the 2024 U.S. Open is shaping up to be a thrilling and unforgettable tournament.
